FIA Launches Prohibited List Project

The FIA has launched its Prohibited List Project as part of the FIA's “Race True” Anti-Doping Campaign.

The project got underway at the end of May, with the F1 GP of Monaco and will continue until the end of the year, including in the CIK-FIA Karting Championship, Cup and Trophy events.

It is worth noting some of the things the FIA reminds competitors:

  • You are responsible for any substance that enters your body, regardless of whether or not the substance has been taken or administered intentionally
  • If you need to use a medicine which is normally prohibited, you must fill in a Therapeutic Use Exemption request and send it to your National Anti-Doping Organisation for approval
  • Even apparently benign drugs such as eyes drops, nose drops or throat pastilles can contain prohibited substances
  • Be careful: nutritional supplements do not always mention all the substances they contain. So always make sure that you know what you are taking.

After a win in Germany last, year 13-year old Polish karter, Igor Walilko, was given a two year ban from competition after testing positive for nikethamide - a stimulant which affects the respiratory system and is legally available over the counter in some European countries as a sugar-based lozenge (Walilko is currently appealing the verdict).

A longer term doping prevention project will be launched by the FIA next month. It will incorporate an anti-doping e-learning course and quiz for the attention of drivers and anybody else who is keen to know more about anti-doping in competitive sport.
