Weather Holds Off For NSW Speedway, Round 2

A beautiful sunny winter’s day greeted karters as they turned up to run Karting World / Sayre Racing sponsored  “The Nepean Open “ which formed Round 2 of the 2011 championship.

As the original meeting in March was washed out and rescheduled for 3 July, everyone welcomed the bright sunny sky and the racing was fantastic from the opening green flag until  to the final chequer fell.

The day opened with the Mighty Midgets on track and a great field of 15 young speedway drivers were on hand to try and stop the dominance of one driver in this class, Kaidon Brown.  Whilst the racing from these 7 to 10 year olds was first class, it was all in vain as Kaidon made it a clean sweep winning all 4 races on the day.

This result saw Kaidon take his 3rd straight High Points Award across all classes and he also further consolidated his lead in the Club Championship.

The final placings for the Midget class sponsored by Coghlan Oval Track Racing was 1st Kaidon Brown, 2nd Mitchell Pyne, 3rd Andrew Sayre and the feature winner was Kaidon Brown.

Next on track was the Clubman Heavy class and a very strong field faced the starter.  This class nearly presented the day with another clean sweep with Tim Baker winning heats 2, 3 and the feature, his run only stopped by Gary Morris who got his day off to a great start by winning heat 1. Tim’s feature race was a very patient drive from his rear of grid starting position.

The final placings for the Carline Automotive Caringbah Clubman Heavy  class was 1st Tim Baker, 2nd Gary Morris, 3rd Daniel Selmes and the feature was won by Tim Baker.

The Rookie class, while small in numbers, is very high in talent and the racing displayed on track is testimony to this fact. Whilst the results show Andrew Beattie won heats 1, 3 and the feature, he certainly didn’t have it all his own way and had to work very hard to achieve these results. Young lady racer Taylor Coghlan was successful in winning heat 2 and took Andrew’s quest for a clean sweep.

The final placing for Karting World / Sayre Racing  Rookie class was 1st Andrew Beattie , 2nd and 3rd were tied on points and, using a  count back system, 2nd place was awarded to Lachlan Caunt and 3rd to Taylor Coghlan.

The KT Light class is really building into a big division of great speedway drivers and another  field of 15 was present to race at the Open.  The field is so evenly matched that a different driver greeted the chequered flag each race.  Heat 1 saw Kyle Caunt  take the win, heat 2 had lady racer Nicole Calleja win the event, in heat 3 Nathan Bailey showed everyone a clean pair of heels and led home the field. The drive from Daniel Gow to win the feature was one of the drives of the day. Starting from position 11, Daniel found his way to the front and was able to hang on for a great win.

The Hopping’s Mowers sponsored KT Light final placings were 1st Daniel Gow, 2nd Nathan Bailey, 3rd Peter Bourke with the feature win to Daniel Gow.

A 14 kart Junior field was present and newly crowned State Champion, Daniel Sayre, won heats 1 and 3. In heat 2, Jordyn Brazier found some speed to lead home a fast closing field.  The feature race saw a very spirited drive from Jake Baines who, from his 7th place starting position, found the lead on lap 1 and led all 20 laps to record the win.

The Junior class is sponsored by Fire Service Plus and the final results were 1st Daniel Sayre, 2nd Lindsay Jones, 3rd Jordyn Brazier and feature was won by Jake Baines.

In heat 2 a situation on the track saw 4 or 5 karts get together and Ayden Elliott, with nowhere to go, ended up over the top of Nikki Briton. Whilst all drivers finished the race, on the in-grid when the karts had come to a stop, Nikki reported feeling some discomfort in her neck.  As a precautionary  measure an ambulance was called and she was taken to hospital for assessment, being released with no major injury later that evening.

The newly formed highly competitive KT Pro class was last to use the race track and again the crowd watching the event were not disappointed with what they saw. This class is made up of multi Australian Champions, State Champions and Club and Class Champions, and the racing produced by these seasoned drivers every meeting is nothing short of exciting and breathtaking to watch.

Cameron Coghlan was victorious in heats 1 and 3. The second heat saw a win go to Michael Jordan and second generation driver David Hopping took out the feature race. The points at the end of the meeting saw Cameron break through for his first win of the season.

The Wescranes Sponsored KT Pro podium was 1st Cameron Coghlan, 2nd Michael Jordan, 3rd David Boyd and the feature winner, David Hopping .

Other Award winners on the day were:

  • The overall High Points Award - Kaidon Brown
  • The On Track Automotive Hard Luck Award - Neil Bird
  • The Stillshots “ Art of Speedway Karting “ Award - Greg Bignall

Once the presentation was over, families and friends again stayed to enjoy their afternoon as a game of parents-versus-children touch football commenced and only stopped due to the sun going down.
