Auckland Grammar Is NZ's Top Karting School

Auckland Grammar School is New Zealand's top KartSport school for 2011 thanks to the on-track efforts of students Paul Blomqvist and Arthur Gabb in Hamilton over the weekend.

The pair proved too good  for fellow students representing schools from all over the country at the A1 Dezine-sponsored ninth annual KartSport New Zealand National Schools' Championship meeting, Blomqvist winning the 125cc Rotax Max Light class, Gabb finishing sixth in Senior 100cc Yamaha Light.

This year's Schools event attracted over 150 school-age karters from as far south as Dunedin, with Blomqvist and Gabb winning the Secondary Schools prize for Auckland Grammar School, Christchurch pair Jordan McDonnell and Jacob Mitchell the Intermediate/Primary category one for Chisnall Wood Intermediate and Windsor Primary, and Arie Hutton (King's College) and Maddie Wise (Napier Boys High School) the Bruce McLaren KartSport Award in association with the Bruce McLaren Trust and Formula Challenge.*

Individual National Schools' class titles were also contested with wins going to Caleb Cross (Cadet, Freeville Primary School, ChCh), Thomas Ingram (Junior Restricted 100cc Yamaha, Manchester Street School, Feilding), Maddie Wise (Junior 100cc Yamaha, Napier Boys High School), Reid Harker (Formula Junior, Kristin School), Arie Hutton (Senior 100cc Yamaha Light, King's College) and Paul Blomqvist (125cc Rotax Max Light, Auckland Grammar School).

Auckland Grammar School becomes the sixth school to hold the premier Secondary Schools' title, joining inaugural event winner Rangitoto College, two-time winners St Kentigern College, St Andrews College (Christchurch) and Palmerston North High School, and Nelson's Waimea College.

The 2011 A1 Dezine KartSport New Zealand National Schools' Championship meeting was run with the support of Ace Concrete Cutting, Full Throttle Karts, Lascom Motorsport, Mi Sedaap, Pacific Kartsport, TopTown Tyres, Waipa Home of Champions and www.toys2u.co.nz.

* Before they receive their prize of a drive in a Formula Challenge racing car Bruce McLaren KartSport Award winners Arie Hutton and Maddie Wise will have to prepare and present a project on the life and achievements of famous New Zealand racing driver Bruce McLaren to their respective school peers.
