Outcomes From AKA National Karting Council Meeting

AKA press release

The National Karting Council (NKC) of the Australian Karting Association (AKA) met in Cairns, Queensland on the weekend.

With a 91-page agenda full of items for discussion by the NKC, the meeting produced a number of positive outcomes for the sport across the country.

At the most recent meeting of the NKC it was decided that two committees should be formed to investigate the future options for engines used in the Midgets (soon to be renamed Cadets), Rookies, National and Clubman categories.

Over the past few months, both committees – one led by Karting WA delegate Gary Light and the other by National Executive Member Craig Denton – have spent a significant amount of time researching the options for the engines used in these categories in the future.

At the weekend both Light and Denton updated the NKC on the progress already made by their respective committees.

“Both committees have made significant inroads in the initial stage of the process and are very much ahead where they thought they would be at this point in time,” said National President Simon Whiting.

“The performance level of the engines the committees are looking for is very similar to what we currently have in those categories but with more consistency between engine performance, use of technology and the reduction of overall running costs.”

With the aim of reducing unnecessary costs, the Cadets and Rookies categories will only be restricted to use aluminum wheels and wheel hubs only for State Championships during 2012. This rule will be mandatory for all competition in the categories from January 1, 2013.

Consideration across the weekend was also given to continued training of Stewards across the country with a soon to be launched on-line system to be complimented by further seminar style training.

With the National Sprint Kart Championships being held in Darwin for the first time in 2012 on July 6-8, the event will be marked by a ‘double dose’ of karting in the region. The Northern Territory State Championships will be held on June 30/July 1, with practice being held on one day only on June 29, practice for the National Championships will begin on Wednesday July 4.

The format for over-subscribed categories at the National Championships will also revert back to using a last chance repercharge rather than the split A, B, C, D format as of the 2012 event.

The Monarto Karting Complex in South Australia was selected as the venue for the 2013 National Sprint Kart Championships following a presentation on the weekend by Go-Kart Club of South Australia President Nathan Burgess.

National Officials co-ordinator Brian Sparrow presented the NKC options in regards to Officials clothing. In conjunction with the implementation of this new range of clothing the NKC voted to remove rule 17.12(j) in regards to high visibility vests effective January 1, 2012.

Following on from the co-joining of classes document distributed to States and Clubs earlier this year, Media and Marketing Manager Lee Hanatschek will work closely with National Vice-President David Murray to further implement these guidelines across the country. These guidelines are aimed at improving the track time for competitors during an event, Hantschek and Murray will work with various clubs across the country to further enhance this process.

Addendums to the AKA Manual will be issued for the respective rule changes in the coming days with the individual implementation dates advised accordingly.
