The Tradition Stays Alive - City of Sydney Titles

from Max Laybutt

The Sydney Kart Racing Club’s City Of Sydney Titles were conducted by the Combined District Kart Club at their Lithgow circuit on the weekend, August 27-28..

Both clubs have worked together on many occasions over past years as well as now while the Sydney Kart Club continues to progress towards completing negotiations for its own venue within the Sydney basin.

A ‘must do’ on most karter’s programs, all agreed that the CDKC did the event justice with their normal family type club atmosphere a factor that is being continued and strongly supported by the new CDKC club president Paul Giuntini and his committee.

More than 220 karters (haven’t seen that many at a NSW club meeting for a while?) faced the starter over a 2 day meeting under a full championship format (qualifying, 2 heats, pre-final and final) with a total of 17 classes being contested.

There is no doubt that being a round of the TaG Super Series added to the meeting’s success with very large fields in all the TaG classes.

TaG racing in both the Open and Restricted division is providing a lot of karters with some very well constructed racing, and CRG’s Chris Dell is to be congratulated for his support of these classes.

All the TaG/Sportsman classes were well supported and provided top racing in each class. The Sportsman or Open class of TaG saw Mathew Erdmann set the pace in the Light division, however great to see that Lee Adams has lost nothing during his small “holiday” since Oran Park closed.
The Heavy weights saw Michael Hazelton lead Joshua Pontello home in the final. Adam Hunter was there all the way but a small indiscretion with Jason Hryniuk shuffled both Adam and Jason from the front of the pack.

The Restricted guys provided really great racing in the Light, Heavy and Superheavy divisions and this range of classes is providing a lot of drivers a great place to enjoy their racing.

All our junior drivers benefited from seeing some of the real heroes of our sport roll up their sleeves and get very serious at what was probably the best club meeting held in recent times. Drivers such as Jason Varley, Jason Hryniuk, Adam Hunter, Joshua Pontello, Michael Hazelton, Mathew Erdmann and many other contestants from the top end of karting provided a standard of racing that has been lacking from club racing for some time.

Not to be outdone, huge fields of Midgets, Rookies, Junior Nationals and Junior Clubman went out to do battle and provide some very exciting racing. It was great to see Junior Clubman form a class and they need to continue to work together to ensure this class grows in the future.

The normal Combined District Club National classes of Over 40’s, National Lights, Heavies and Super Heavies, were also extremely well represented, with a large field of Super Heavy guys really turning up the heat. The dice that went on all day between Tom Hearn and Ben Piper, with father Maurie Piper leading the rest of a spirited pack not too far behind.

Glen Egan led a very strong Over 40’s field to the top step of the podium, and Brayden Pritchard, now just out of junior racing and into his senior years was just too good for the rest of a large bunch of National Light protagonists.

And if Clubman is your go... both the Light and Heavy Clubman classes were very strongly supported and in the Heavy division, Jason Varley worked extremely hard to keep a very large strong field behind him in the final, a field containing the likes of Daniel Baker, Rodney Baker, Nigel Stones, David Kermond, (David will be off to SKUSA USA National Titles this year driving for the Kosmic team), and many other top line drivers.

In Clubman Light another large field went out to try and grab themselves a 2011 City Of Sydney Title. Local CDKC Clubman exponent, Ian Beeraz, was a very short priced favourite, but nobody counted on one Darren Foley who just decided this was going to be his day and despite Ian throwing everything at him, Darren went on to victory.

The Combined District club is a heavy supporter of the Ladies class, and always provide this class at all their normal club meetings in preparation for the CDKC annual Ladies event held in January each year (an event which continues to grow each year). At this City Of Sydney meeting a keen club supporter, Claire White, really turned up with her  ‘A’ game, and provided some very real competition for the other girls headed by the now 21-year-old Amanda Abbott who received her birthday cake on the grid with everybody present to wish her well in her future years.

The normal Saturday night dinner provided by the now famous Lithgow canteen girls was, as usual, just superb with lots and lots of fellowship. To top it off, birthday cakes were there to celebrate the 70th birthdays of CDKC’s renowned Russell Grimson, and none other than our famous grid marshall Bob Blackman.

Combined District Kart Club will provide another great meeting on September 24th (Light day) and September 25th (Heavy day). This will be a shakedown meeting for the major meeting of their calendar, the “Clyde Marshall” - another historic event that should be well supported.

The City Of Sydney Titles will once again be held at the Lithgow track on the last weekend of August next year. So, it is good quality racing in big fields that you are after, mark the date in your 2012 calendar now.

The results of the 2011 City Of Sydney Titles were available through the cm:s system at the track, and trough the AKA web site immediately after each race, and are now up on the AKA web site under the Sydney Kart Club listing for all to see.
