BSKC Concludes At Kawartha

press release

The 2011 Brian Stewart Racing Karting Championship (BSRKC) has come to a close, as the final round was contested last weekend at the Kawartha Speedway in Fraserville, Ontario. With championship titles on the line and 100 bonus points awarded to finale entrants, karters descended upon the popular track looking to secure race wins and lock up tight point battles. Those who prevailed walked away with bragging rights after conquering the challenging road/oval course layout while championship winners will take home the coveted Stewart Cup trophy at the yearend banquet and awards gala.

As always, hosts Simcoe Kart Club and Waterloo Regional Kart Club upped the ante with draw prizes and race day cash purses sponsored by Kawartha Speedway. With warm temperatures greeting everyone on Friday and Saturday, Sunday gave way to much cooler temperatures.

Five classes were on Saturday's schedule, with tight racing action and points battles alive across the board. Jeffrey Kingsley would secure the pole position in the Junior Medium class at Kawartha, only to have championship contender Scott Nagel edge him at the line by a scanty 0.018 during the ten lap prefinal. Race #1 winner Jaret Stewart would be back on top of the podium when all was said and done for the day's final event over Kyle Edgar and Bailey Jacobs, and when championship points were tabulated a dead-even tie between Stewart and Nagel resulted with both pilots scoring 483 points. With the tiebreaker, Stewart is declared champion of the hotly contested class and is now a back-to-back champ in Junior Medium.

Heading into Kawartha the leader in the Rotax/TaG Junior standings, Nicholas Ledson scored the pole position and went on to take the prefinal win and main event victory to put a stamp on his BSRKC season. Braydon Strik and Trevor Rancier completed the podium. With Ledson's dominating weekend, along with consistent finishes in all previous rounds, he was able to earn the title of 2011 BSRKC champion, improving from his third place in the standings in 2010.

In Rotax/TaG Senior, James Farrar just edged Olivier Cote for the elusive pole position. Farrar turned up the wick during racing action, taking the prefinal win over Cote by nearly six seconds. Farrar's streak would come to an end after being declared underweight at the scales, giving the win to Cote followed by Dale Cook and Kevin May. With three wins to his credit, Cote took the overall championship title in commanding fashion.

Clay Van Eerd started his weekend off right, taking the pole in the Rotax Mini Max class and went on to secure a solid win in the prefinal. Van Eerd completed a great run by also winning the day's final event, with championship contender Ryan Mohan hot on his heels. Zachary Shearer completed the podium. With his three final victories in 2011, Van Eerd claims the Mini Max title, 14 points over 2010 title holder Mohan.

Rounding out Saturday was the Senior Medium class, an addition to the Kawartha schedule. Perennial four-cycle frontrunner Jon Treadwell claimed the pole and prefinal win, edging another frontrunner Kevin Monteith at the line. Treadwell went on to a perfect day, taking the main event win with Monteith and T.J. Marshall in tow.

Seven classes were set to run on Sunday, the final day in 2011 for BSRKC on-track action. Matthew Di Leo earned his first pole of the season in ICC/Moto but title contender Kristian Jeffrey claimed the prefinal win a half second over Di Leo. In the final, Di Leo was back on top, taking a dominating win by a staggering 14 seconds over Jeffrey and Max Gamble. With three wins to his credit, and never finding himself off the podium, Di Leo claimed the overall class title.

Kyle Edgar clocked the fastest time in the qualifying session in Junior Heavy, but championship point leader Scott Nagel rose to the occasion to take the prefinal win. In the final, Nicholas Ledson got to the checkered flag first, with Edgar and Nagel battling it out for the two other podium positions. Nagel would be declared the overall class champion with his three wins and consistent season, bettering his standing from second place a year ago.

Austin Bisschop and Jeffrey Kingsley continued their battle in the Junior Lite category, as Bisschop scored the pole by a mere 0.070 over his class rival. Kingsley then turned it around in the prefinal, edging Bisschop at the line by just over six hundredths. In the end, Kingsley had the final say, taking the win over Bisschop and Ryan Mohan, and with the same result in the final point calculations Kingsley added another title to his superb 2011 karting season.

Paul Draganac was quickest in the Masters qualifying session, but fell to the dominant Steve Lyons during the ten lap prefinal race. Lyons went on to take the final win, over John Brough and Draganac. With a perfect run of five main event wins, Lyons comfortably took the overall class championship title.

In the young Novice class, Andrew Whelan bested the field in qualifying, with Phoenix Humphrey taking the win in the prefinal event. Humphrey also scored the final win, with Zachery Latimer taking second and Whelan in third. Latimer came out on top in the overall championship standings, and will be crowned Novice champ at the 2011 BSRKC banquet and awards gala.

Adrian Stahle scored the pole position in Senior Heavy qualifying, en route to both the prefinal and final wins. Tristan Gill gave Stahle a run for his money in the final, but would have to settle for second place with Brett Rickeard rounding out the podium. Despite a DNF at Kawartha, two wins to his credit helped T.J. Marshall claim the overall class title.

In Senior Lite, Pearce Herder took top honours in qualifying, while Kevin Monteith scored the prefinal win over the pole sitter. Herder was back on top later in the day, taking the main event win just ahead of Monteith with Jon Treadwell back in third. Herder's win propelled him to the top of the point's standings closing the 2011 BSRKC season in fine form.
