The Top Racers Meet At Genk

They will all be there: in KF1, the Drivers presented as the day’s great hopes, led by Nyck de Vries and Alexander Albon; and in KZ1, champions whose names are already on the list of results of the most prestigious CIK-FIA Championships, like Davide Fore, Alessandro Piccini, Marco Ardigo, Bas Lammers, Jonathan Thonon or Arnaud Kozlinski.

This coming weekend of 3-4 September, the Belgian circuit of Genk is hosting the third round of the CIK-FIA World KF1 Championship and both CIK-FIA World Cups for gearbox karts, KZ1 on the one hand and KZ2 on the other.

For the latter category, it will be a premiere as for the first time in the history of Karting a World Cup is allocated to the 125cc gearbox karts of division 2. Historically, every World Cup maiden edition (in ICA, KF3 or Super-ICC) has revealed a totally unexpected winner. Does it mean that prior to this weekend it would be preferable to be tipped as an outsider and not to be on the list of favourites, which in particular includes the 2011 European Champion Fabian Federer, Joel Johansson, Mirko Torsellini and Viktor Öberg? It will be revealed on Sunday around 16h45!

In KZ1, unless the final is held in the rain, victory should be grabbed by one of the most seasoned and successful Drivers. Bas Lammers is throwing in his 2010 title and is aware that he will have to work hard to hold at bay his male team-mate Jérémy Iglésias, his female team-mate Beitske Visser and the field’s “pros” like De Conto (the 2011 European Champion), Ardigo, Fore, Piccini, Mich, Convers, Abbasse and Kozlinski. But the biggest favourites are perhaps Belgium’s Jonathan Thonon, Yannick de Brabander and Rick Dreezen who will be galvanised by the opportunity to run before their supporters.

In KF1, the World Championship will reach and cross its midpoint in the Belgian Limburg. Winner of five out of the eight races already held, the Dutchman Nyck de Vries will also compete on familiar grounds because he has often trained and raced on the Genk track. Defeated after the German event outrageously dominated by de Vries, his opponents, led by Ignazio d’Agosto and Alexander Albon, regained their confidence in Spain as Albon notably took two wins.

The KZ1 and KZ2 categories will get to the heart of the matter on Friday at 17h30 with their qualifying practice. Saturday will be dedicated to the qualifying heats (13 in total) and to the first two races counting towards the World KF1 Championship. On Sunday, these KF1 karts will compete in two additional races (as a reminder, each meeting includes 4 races, 3 of which being counted to draw up of the Championship classification), and the final phase for KZ1 & KZ2 will take place in the afternoon, with the usual succession of prefinals and finals. It is worth noting that the final of the World Cup for KZ1 will benefit from slightly delayed TV broadcast on channel VT4.
