2011 Non-Gearbox (Rotax) Superkart Nationals

press release

Forty two Non-Gearbox Superkarts from four States contested the Nationals under varying weather conditions over two days at Phillip Island on the weekend. A new lap record was set for the Juniors by Anthony Rugolo from South Australia with a stunning 1:59.8645 during race one.

In the Lights it was all Shaun Pannowitch from South Australia up until the final when Brad Stebbing (VIC) and Paul King (SA) challenged hard for the lead on a drying track. Shaun's earlier wins giving him the convincing finish. Paul King's Nationals almost ended in the first heat after colliding heavily with Victorian Favourite Russ Occhipinti into turn one. Unfortunately Russ took the brunt of the accident ending his chances there and then.

In the Heavies it was Gary Pegoraro (Vic) and Steve Milner (Vic) who shared the wins over the two days and tying on points, with Steve winning the final race and thus taking the Championship. Ian Williams (SA) had a solid meeting bringing him in with a third place.

The Juniors raced hard and gave the spectators some great action as they always do. Anthony Rugolo (SA) showed early pace and took out the lap record in race one. Eventual winner Tim Clarke (VIC) had a disappointing start and thought it was all over till the track went wet and played into his hands. Dylan Howell (SA) was never far from the leaders and finished in third. Liam McAdam (QLD) was plagued with a variety of niggling issues and would have preferred a stronger result after travelling all that way, but father David and Liam still said they had a great week end at The Island. Most disappointed of the Juniors would have to be Conor Nicholson (Vic) who suffered a radiator leak during the first heat that ended his chances very early.
