Hughes Upstages Title Contenders At Newcastle

press release

Adam Hughes has upstaged the Pro Light (KF1) championship contenders during qualifying day in the final round of the CIK Stars of Karting Series presented by Newcastle today.

Adam HughesAfter qualifying through the top five shootout, Hughes (right, AF Images/Budd pic) finished the day with three second places in the heat races to claim pole position for tomorrow morning’s opening 25-lap final.

“It was good to get into the shootout but then I made a mistake on my flying lap and ended up fourth fastest,” said Hughes.

“To finish with three second places during the day, especially to finish right behind Cian (Fothergill) in the final heat gives me confidence for tomorrow’s finals.”

While he may be out of the title chase, Hughes has got his sights on victory to help him claim third overall in the standings.

“I haven’t managed to win a round this year, which is really disappointing after the pace we’ve shown in the Kosmic kart throughout the year,” said Hughes.

“While the championship is unobtainable, I’ve still got a lot of pressure on myself to win the round and hopefully claim third in the championship.”

Tesa Tape-backed driver Matthew Waters won both opening heats before fading to ninth in the final encounter while reigning champion Cian Fothergill bounced back from a mechanical failure in heat one before winning the final 15-lap race.

In the Pro Gearbox (KZ2) category, Kel Treseder snared pole position to maintain his position at the top of the points standings before winning the opening 15-lap race. He backed this performance up with a second and fourth place throughout the afternoon.

David Sera won heat two, while Tyler Greenbury dominated the third.

Defending Pro Junior (KF3) champion Pierce Lehane won all three heat races today, however, in the final race his winning margin was sliced into by Joseph Mawson.

Brett Robinson and James Duckworth will start on pole position in tomorrow’s opening Clubman and Junior National finals respectively.
