Fothergill Crowned Driver's Driver of the Year

press release

Queenslander Cian Fothergill received the prestigious Dunlop Driver’s Driver of the Year Award at the Presentation Dinner for the 2011 CIK Stars of Karting Series presented by Castrol EDGE on Sunday night.

In accepting the award, voted by series drivers on who they believe has been the best and fairest driver of the year and is a great ambassador for the sport of karting, Fothergill (right, AF Images/Budd pic) was overwhelmed by the accolades from his peers.

“This is an absolute honour to win this award,” said Fothergill.

“To voted by your fellow drivers for this is very special and means a lot.  None of this would be possible without help of the team at Tracksa, MG Engines, Remo Racing and the support from my family.”

In a tight battle for the Trans-West Manufacturers Challenge it was the Chris Dell-led CRG Australia team that secured a narrow victory over the Kosmic outfit.

CRG team manager Ken Schroeder accepted the award on behalf of the team and dedicated the team’s success to the hard work of all of the team’s drivers, mechanics and supporters.

“As a team, this award is the one that everyone team wants to win and it feels great to have won it,” said Schroeder.

“It is a reward for all of the hard work put in by everyone in the CRG tent throughout the year.”

Tony Kart Australia was chosen as the Best Presented Team of the Year while Pro Light (KF1) Champion Jake Spencer received the Kart X Rookie of the Year Award.

Spencer also received the James Courtney trophy as the category champion, joining the likes of Jamie Whincup, Mark Winterbottom, Barclay Holden and Fothergill as former champions of the Pro Light (KF1) category.

Pro Gearbox (KZ2) Champion Tyler Greenbury received the John Pizarro trophy from the 15-time Australian champion.  Jon Targett was also on hand to present the trophy named in his honour for the second consecutive year to Sydney teenager Pierce Lehane.

The championship runner-up and third place getters in each of the three CIK-specification categories will also receive their race tyres and entries for the 2012 series supplied to them.

A number of the 110 attendees also walked away with some great wine donated by Mollydooker wines along with some signed Castrol memorabilia and also some great merchandise from Yamaha.
