Mawson Dominates Rotax Light At Canberra Pro Tour

press release

The final day of the Rotax Pro Tour Canberra, the first event of the 2011/12 Rotax Pro Tour, saw a number of exciting finals races in each of the seven classes that competed at Canberra’s Fairbairn Park circuit. The main focus of attention was on Rotax Light, where 28 of the 35 karts entered battled it out in the 25-lap final.

Of the 35 drivers competing, Joseph Mawson was the man to beat. Having won all three of the heat races that he participated in, Mawson took charge from the get go in the pre-final and dominated the 18 lap race from Jaie Robson and Geoff Connell, putting him on pole for the main event. In his debut race in the senior ranks, Mawson didn’t disappoint anyone who witnessed his performance. He took the lead during the early stages of the race and held off Robson, who stayed on the tail of the Arrow Kart driver to take out his first Rotax Light Final. Robson finished a commendable second and Pierce Lehane came home third.

Mawson and Lehane will now carry their good form from this weekend over to the Rotax World Finals next month in the UAE, where they’ll fight it out in the Junior Max class, the class they graduated from last season.

Junior Max itself was an exciting affair. In the Pre-Final, Cam Hill led for virtually the whole race until Thomas Randle made a pass on the last lap to take the win and grab pole for the 25-lap Final. The Final itself was just as exciting with a number of early race accidents mixed with some exciting racing. Hill got off to a bad start and dropped to third in the opening stages of the race behind Joseph Burton-Harris and race leader Randle. Hill got past Burton-Harris with three laps to go, but was unable to get past Randle, who won the Final from Hill and Burton-Harris.

Rotax Heavy was another class that was hotly contested all weekend. Aaron Rintoul was the man everyone was chasing by virtue of his performance in heats to take pole for the Pre-Final. Troy Woolston, the National Champion, was also making a point to many why he carried the No. 1 plate and wasn’t going to give that up in a hurry. Rintoul led for most of the Pre-Final, before Woolston seized the chance took the lead with a few laps to go and win from Rintoul and Todd Davey in third. For the Final itself, it ran at a frantic pace. It also contained a few spectacular crashes, including a first lap melee that took out Daniel Stein and Chris Broad. Rintoul and Woolston continued their weekend long battle right the 25-lap Final, with Woolston coming out the eventual victor ahead of Rintoul and Davey.

Woolston made it a double celebration by also taking outright honours in the DD2 class. The 18-lap Pre-Final was a thriller, with Kyle Ensbey lucking out through some ill-timed opportunities that really got him worked up. Having started second behind Woolston, he dropped to fourth during the early stages before attempting to pass Thomas MacDonald at turn one with a gap that didn’t exist and crashed out with a few laps remaining. Woolston took the Pre-Final from Damian Ward and Mitch Bink, setting up an exciting Final. Woolston was slow off the start for the Final, allowing Damian Ward to take an early command of the race. Woolston would fall immediately behind him and would chase down Ward before taking the lead at turn one with 11 laps to go. From there, Woolston raced to victory ahead of Ward with Bink in third.

DD2 Masters was a two horse race between Tony Kart’s Hamish Leighton and rival Tony Prendergast. The pair fought it out fiercely throughout the Pre-Final, leaving many of their rivals a fair way behind them, including Dale Verrall. Prendergast took the lead mid-race, before Leighton fought back near the end of the Pre-Final to take the win. Prendergast was second and Verrall third. In the 25-lap Final, the race itself was marred by a nasty crash involving Jose Ruiz, who had no brakes at the top of Denso Back Straight hit the tyre wall hard. Thankfully, he emerged without any injury. Leighton took the Final from Prendergast and Verrall.

Rotax Over 40s saw Nick Karmalis dominate both the Pre-Final and Final events, cruising to victory ahead of Greg Moores and Anthony Grant in both races. Meanwhile, in the invited Rotax Super Heavy class, Bruce Otter made it a clean sweep of wins for the entire weekend, winning the Pre-Final from Eddie Ruiz and Greg Williams and the Final itself from Williams and Michael Hannaford.

The next round of the 2011/12 Rotax Pro Tour will be the Todd Road complex in Melbourne during the Australia Day weekend of January 27/28/29, 2012. In the meantime, 11 drivers will represent Australia in the Rotax World Finals on November 19-26 at the Al Ain Raceway in the UAE.
