Karters Gearing Up for Vic OpenTweet
Kart racers from all across the country will be heading to Geelong next week to compete in the prestigious Victorian Open State Championships at the Beckley Park Karting Complex.
More than 340 entries have been received across 15 categories for March 9-11 event, ranging in age from as young a seven years of age through to the more experienced in life in the Clubman Over 40’s division.
It is the first time since 2008 that the Geelong Karting Club has hosted the blue-ribbon event and Victorian Karting Association President David Murray believes next weekend’s event could be the largest karting event in the country this year.
“The Victorian Championships is traditionally one of the largest events in the country and with this year’s National Championships being held in Darwin, we could very well be hosting the largest number of karters in the one place next weekend,” said Murray.
“Having hosted some of the country’s largest karting events previously, the Geelong Club is very well versed in putting on a huge event, the Geelong committee and club members have been working tirelessly over the past few months to ensure that the event is a success.”
It is estimated that the local economy is set to enjoy a boost in the vicinity of $550,000 as over 1000 visitors converge on the region next week. The racing drivers, mechanics, teams and associates will begin arriving on Tuesday ahead of practice beginning on Wednesday.
“The sport offers you much more than just a chance to race a go-kart, it provides you with a lifestyle for you and your family along with the opportunity to make some great friendships,” said Murray.
“Generally you will find that each driver will have at least two, possibly up to four, family members, mechanics and supporters who will travel to the event with them, all of whom the local economy will benefit from. Highlighting this information is the fact that accommodation for the weekend in the region is at a premium with very few hotels not already booked out.”
Practice for the championships begins on Wednesday ahead of Qualifying and the opening round of heat races on Friday March 9. The Championship Finals will be contested on Sunday March 11.
