CLOSE ACTION DURING QUALIFYING DAY AT VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

If the action during today’s qualifying at the 2012 Victorian Open Sprint Kart Championships in Geelong is anything to go by, the racing across the weekend is set to be super tight.

A total of 333 drivers have assembled for the event to battle for the 14 championships on offer.

While many of the familiar faces set the pace, such as three-time Australian Champion James Sera and long-time front runner Scott Simpson in the Clubman Light and Clubman Super Heavy respectively, there were also some suprise packets like Mark Dorbolo (right, AF Images pic) who stole the show in Clubman Heavy.

The little-known Victorian upstaged his more fancied rivals to set the fastest time ahead of Glenn Riddell, Travis Kodric and Remo Luciani.

“This is my first big meeting in six years, I’ve only done a couple of races over the past few months so it’s a bit of a surreal feeling to have so many top guys behind me,” said Dorbolo.

“I know that I’ve got the pace but it’s all about using that speed during the racing to stay in front of the ‘big boys’ behind me.”

In the fastest junior category, Junior Max, it was New South Wales Exprit driver Joseph Burton-Harris who snared pole position on his final flying lap ahead of Jake Dixon.

“We missed the set-up in the first session a bit, which meant that the kart didn’t come on as quickly as what we would have liked, but to get pole position from my last flying lap in the second session is very pleasing,” said Burton-Harris (left, AF Images pic).

Joshua Smith set the quickest time in the Cadets category ahead of Jai Sparey and Jordyn Sinni while Reece Sidebottom was the pacesetter in the Rookies category.
