Keane Wraps Up FWT Vortex TaG Cadet TitleTweet
Starting his 2012 karting season on the right foot, cadet pilot Darren Keane walked away from the final round of the Formula Kart Productions Florida Winter Tour the Vortex TaG Cadet champion. A win at the series opener in Palm Beach established Keane as the driver to beat in the ultra-competitive class and Keane came away proving his prowess as he earned two addition podium finishes at the Ocala Gran Prix to secure the championship title.
Taking to the track Saturday on a cool morning for the first event of the double-header weekend, Keane set the tone right off the start by scoring pole position with a fast 40.222 lap. In the always-racy TaG Cadet action, Keane fell to second in the prefinal just missing the victory by a scant 0.098. Back for his final race later in the day, Keane battled for the lead but settled for third at the checkered flag.
Enduring changing track conditions on Sunday, as sprinkles moved into central Florida for the finale round of the Formula Kart weekend, Keane and his Keane Racing crew went to work to ensure a proper set-up for each session. Clocking third quick in the qualifying session, Keane improved to second in the prefinal race. Again, the TaG Cadet drivers would wage an incredible race this time as a steady rained fell on the 6/10-mile circuit and after the 16-lap main event, Keane ended his campaign with a second place podium finish.
With his win in Palm Beach, two-second place results and two third place finishes in the six-race series, Keane emerged at the overall Vortex TaG Cadet Florida Winter Tour Champion. Topping the championship blocks during the afternoon podium presentations, Keane's title has established him as a driver to watch as he continues his quest for more wins, podiums and championships in the karting ranks.
Keane will now turn his attention to the finale Rotax weekend of the 2012 Florida Winter Tour series, as the up-and-coming pilot will be back at the Ocala Gran Prix this weekend in his Keane Racing powered Kosmic kart. Keane currently sits in the fifth place in the overall Mini Max class standings. Entering with momentum gained from his TaG Cadet championship run, Keane will make a bid to take his second Florida Winter Tour championship.
Keane will be back on track testing this week, leading up to controlled practice on Thursday, March 15.
