Accolades Keep Coming For Caitlan Wood

New South Wales kart racer Caitlin Wood continues to receive accolades as she chases her dream of making a career in motorsport.

The Tenambit (near Newcastle) teenager was last year selected to participate in a two-day Karting Academy Qualifying Shootout against eight aspiring female kart racers from across the globe in Switzerland.  The winner, Lucile Cypriano, received a funded drive in the 2011 CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy courtesy CIK-FIA and Women & Motor Sport Commission

Last month Wood, 15, was announced as one of the recipients of a grant from the Aim for the Stars Foundation, a foundation created by World Surfing Champion Layne Beechley to provide girls from a broad range of sports an opportunity to chase their dreams.  In total there was in excess of $70,000 in grants provided to 36 recipients across a wide variety of sports to help the girls succeed as far as possible in their chosen sport.

“It’s a great honour to receive a grant from the Aim for the Stars Foundation,” said Wood.

“The grant I received was a ‘kick-start’ grant.  It’s a great feeling to know that there are opportunities like the Aim for the Stars Foundation out there who are trying to help girls just like me chase their dreams.  I’m very grateful to Layne Beechley and everyone involved in the Foundation.”

Tomorrow, Wood will be a guest speaker at the Women in Australian Motor Sport Luncheon being held in conjunction with this weekend’s Formula 1 QANTAS Australian Grand prix in Melbourne.

It is at this function where she will speak alongside seven-time World Formula 1 Champion Michael Schumacher – a driver Wood has idolised for many years.

“Just to get the opportunity to speak at the Luncheon was amazing but then to hear that the other guest speaker is Michael Schumacher is just out of this world,” said Wood.

“I will be speaking about karting, women in motorsport and my trip to Switzerland last year.”

Following her commitments in Melbourne, Wood will return home before heading North next weekend (March 24/25) to compete in the next event on the Rotax Pro Tour being held on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
