Faint Ready to Chop Up the Opposition

AKA press

Jason Faint is one of Gladstone’s top chefs, but it’s not just in the Rocksalt kitchen where he does his best work; he can whip up a storm on the kart track as well.

This weekend (April 6-8), Faint will swap his chef’s apron for a driving suit and helmet to take on some of Australia’s best drivers in the Queensland State Championships being hosted by the Gladstone Kart Club.

Despite only having been back in the sport after a ten year layoff for a little over 18 months, Faint is confident of mixing it near the front of the 125cc Leopard categories at this weekend’s event.

“I’m racing in both the Leopard Light and Heavy categories, which is going to make for a very busy weekend, and then to throw in a further twist I’m competing aboard a brand new Energy chassis, but I’m confident of a good showing at the championships,” said Faint.

“This is my first major event on my home track since the 1997 National Championships, so hopefully some of the local knowledge will help me be right up the front of the pack.”

The 28 year-old believes that local driver John Grother will be the driver to beat in the Light category, closely followed by reigning National Champion Cian Fothergill, who’s also a local.

“It’s amazing when you look at the number of top level drivers we have in the region at the moment, I think we’d have more top line drivers in this part of the country than any other regional town in Australia,” said Faint.

“John Grother is certainly the ‘King of Gladstone’ he could drive around the track with his eyes closed and will be extremely tough to beat this weekend, so too will Cian and young star Pierce Lehane from Sydney.”

The many months of hard work by the Gladstone Kart Club Members will come to a pinnacle when the 262 competitors take to the track for practice on Wednesday (April 4).

Qualifying will be contested on Good Friday (April 6) followed by the heat races on Saturday April 7 and the championship finals on Easter Sunday (April 8).

The Gladstone Kart Track is located on South Tree Drive, Gladstone.
