Vic Country Series, Rnd 2 Preview

The second round of the Victorian Country Series is being held at Portland this weekend and will feature the Colin DeVries Memorial for Clubman Light.

Around 130 racers from Victoria and South Australia will take to the track, including Portland’s Mat Keiller who will contest the meeting's feature class.

“I came second in it last year and third the year before, so I’m hoping to go one better” he said.

“We’re hoping to get a few out here to see us race, and to help support the Colin Devries Memorial. He was a good bloke who always helped out around the club.”

Another Portland member to be racing across the weekend is Megan Vallance. Megan, who turns 13 next week, has been racing for about five years and now races in Junior National Light. she is sponsored by Beraldo Coffee and Main Street Café Portland.

Megan says she would like to be a paramedic when she grows up so she can drive fast and help people at the same time. Looking back at her racing career she remembers as a young Cadet driver when the boy racers used to give the usual comments like “she’s a girl” but now the same boys come around and say “Hey Megan, can I help you with your kart, change the tyres etc”.

About the Colin DeVries Memorial

Colin DeVries was a valued member of the Portland District Kart Club who is remembered by all that met him as an all round good guy.  His involvement in karting started through his youngest son Mark when he was in Juniors and progressed through to Clubman Light.

Throughout this time he was a AKA Steward both at Club and State level. He was always known for acting in this role with the utmost regard to fairness and the rules of the sport.

Within the Club he was a valued member who was involved in all aspects of the Club from the Committee to working bees.  His committment always saw him recognised as a stalward of the Club.

He was a loving husband to Sue, his best mate and partner in life and an outstanding father to all his children.  His life was dedicated to all his family both immediate and extended.

We honour his memory with the Colin DeVries Memorial for Clubman Light and hope that all competitors will compete in a manner that would make him proud.
