Two Newcastle SoK Wins In a Row For Mawson

press release

Fujitsu Cool driver Joseph Mawson snared his second straight victory at the Newcastle circuit in New South Wales with a win in the Pro Light (KF1) category at round two of the Castrol EDGE CIK Stars of Karting Series on the weekend.

Mawson, who took out last year’s finale at the venue in the Pro Junior (KF3) ranks, was one of the front-runners in the elite series all weekend before taking over the race lead with three laps remaining in the 25-lap main event.

The Top Kart driver from Hinchenbrook (NSW) was one of the pacesetters from the onset with he and 2010 Champion Cian Fothergill holding a commanding buffer over the remainder of the field for the majority of the final race.  When Fothergill came to a halt on lap 23, it allowed Mawson to cruise to victory and cross the line four seconds clear of points leader Daniel Rochford.

“You could certainly say that I had luck on my side,” said Mawson.

“I was able to stay with Cian but couldn’t quite put myself in a position to be able to challenge him, we were very close in lap times.  When he stopped I knew that I had a bit of a gap on the field, so I was able to cruise to victory.

“The Top Kart worked well all weekend.  I qualified for my first top-five shootout in the senior ranks before winning the opening heat and running right near the front of the field all weekend.  It’s all about getting consistent results as I chase the championship.”

Courtesy of his victory, Mawson now sits fifth in the chase for the James Courtney trophy awarded to the Pro Light (KF1) Champion.

This latest victory comes on the back of a sensational start to the 2012 season with Joey claiming the Victorian Clubman Light State Championship victory in March and more recently the Queensland State Championship in the very same class just two weeks ago at the Gladstone circuit where he also made the podium in third place in the Rotax Light category.

The next round of the CIK Stars of Karting Series will be contested at the Ipswich circuit in Queensland on June 16/17 however in the meantime Mawson will be back in action this weekend at the Jason Richards Memorial event as a part of the Rotax Pro Tour in Albury Wodonga on the Victorian/New South Wales border.

“My sponsors have again played a huge part in this win and my success wouldn’t be possible without them.  Both Fujitsu and CAMS have been great along with Top Kart, Kart 1, Hurst Race Engines, Bell Helmets and RADesigns.”
