New South Wales teenager, Torey Blanch, has been nominated by the Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS) to take part in a shootout to win a place on the grid in the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy.

The 15 year-old from Bulahdelah, New South Wales, will be evaluated by the FIA Women in Motor Sport Committee, who will choose the top six candidates from around the world to take part in a qualifying program that will take place at Friuli, Venezia in Italy on 2nd June.

The successful driver from this qualification process will be catapulted into the prestigious international karting championship.

Torey aims to follow in the footsteps of Caitlin Wood who was nominated by WAMS in 2011. Wood, also from NSW, was selected for the qualifying session and impressed the judges by qualifying third overall.

Torey has been karting since the age of ten and has amassed a number of impressive results, including winning the 2012 Ladies National Championship for the Junior National Heavy Class in Lithgow.

“It would have a very big impact on my career, just being able to go overseas and driving,” said Torey.

“It would be a whole new level of experience – getting to learn new tracks, and driving with some of the best from around the world.

“To have my name put up for something like that, out of all the young girls racing in Australia, is really exciting.”

The nomination is part of WAMS’s ongoing commitment to furthering the careers of female racers.

It comes at an exciting time with a number of national initiatives taking place; such as the CAMS Women’s Driver Development Program, which kicks off at the AIS in June.

Head of the nomination committee, Leanne Tander was hopeful that Torey would make it through to the qualification stage to represent Australia.

“This would be the chance of a lifetime for Torey and we are confident she will follow the trail blazed by Caitlin last year, said Mrs Tander.

“She was a standout candidate for us to put forward to the FIA, and I believe that if she is given the opportunity she will represent Australian motor sport very well.”
