Festival State Cup, Round 2

by Danny Somerville

The Barossa came alive for the second round of the Festival cup held at the Molly Dooker Raceway in the Barossa Valley last weekend (full results on AKA timing HERE).

There was an excellent turn out for the event with some classes enjoying big numbers in their field and brilliant racing by all. The event was packed with everything from superfast driving to big rollovers and at the end of the night some great wines from our track sponsor to warm the toes on a freezing evening in the Barossa.

A great day and night had by all, but it all started with a rollover on the roll around in the Cadets with the 53 kart of Hayden Jericho being flipped onto his lid through the Gum Tree turn. After all the commotion, the Cadet class was won by gun driver Jackson Rees from the Kustom Karts camp who blitzed through the pack and didn’t finish out of the top 2 for the day. He put in an impressive drive to win the final under lights in the cold weather. Closely chasing at his heals was Jason Bowyer, who challenged hard all day and drove an outstanding race to 2nd, with Cooper Hay flying home to 3rd. Overall the Cadets put on a cracking show for the crowd with some amazing overtaking maneuvers.

Race 2 on the program was the Clubman Heavy with a field of 8 and full of quality. The battle was on between Andrew Cash, who dominated the evening, and Lee Cocker, who was as smooth and consistent as ever. Cocker took the chocolates for the evening with Cash being disqualified in Heat 1. Third was track sponsor Mr. Molly Dooker himself, Sparky Marquis, who battled with Daniel Wallis 4th for the evening and won on count back with equal points. It was a really unlucky night for seasoned compainer Simon Granfield who could not buy a clean lap for the evening and battled hard for a minor position.

Race 3 was the Rookies with a great field of 14 Karts; every lap was 10/10ths from these little warriors with a totally dominant performance by Josh Montagu who was first to the chequred in every race of the day. He was flawless with his driving and his setup was perfect for all the changing condition over the day.

Close behind there was a ding dong battle between Ben Delaney and Jacob Dowsen in the Tony Kart with Ben just sneaking past Jacob by 1 point to take 2nd position for the day.  A great drive by the P-plater Levi Henderson who looks like he can peddle very well and is one to look out for.

Race 4, Clubman Light, was all about the dominant performance by Daimon Goode. The Tony Kart driver is the talk of the town in karting at the moment, winning all his races by huge margins. Goode had the setup to die for and drove flawlessly for the evening and was never threatened. Second place was Nick Holmes-Karavas who stepped back in time and drove an old school Swiss Hustless machine for the evening and drove a very consistent day for the JK Tuning outfit. Third and battling hard with Holmes-Karavas was Tristan Gray with Matt Mahar close behind finishing in 4th.

Race 5, the Junior National Lights, came out to play with some serious wheel-to-wheel racing in race 1. Then came race 2 which came to a massive halt on lap 1 when Holly Marquis was clipped and sent vertical into a flip and a hard landing upside down with Rylie Buik and Max Carter copping the impact on the way down. All 3 walked back to the pits with some serious work to do for their mechanics to get their machines back together again. The day was a battle between Josh Denton and Tyler Morrison, Josh winning on count back with equal points. Third place went to a consistent Jayden Sharrad with Holly Marquis amazingly finishing 5th for the day even with the huge shunt.

Race 6 of the evening was the battle of the senior drivers, the Clubman Over 40s. These fellas put on a hell of a battle all night with the night's winnings going to a super fast Sparky Marquis who took 3 out of the 4 race wins for the evening, including the final.

Club President Steven Blee was nose to tail with Marquis all day until the final when a DNF knocked him down to 3rd for the day with the always consistent Keith Bartlett sliding into second place for the meeting. The battle for the FSC is going to go down to the wire this year in this class with great finishes by all the top guns.

Race 7, the Sportsman 125 Light, was the battle of a couple of stars of SA motorsports with champion kart racer and ex Formula Ford driver Paul Pittam going up against SA's own Sprintcar star Luke Dillon. These two went blow for blow all night in both the Lights and Heavies for the evening, with Pittam winning this battle in the Lights and Dillon finishing 2nd for the evening. Alex Baker came home in a consistent 3rd after finding his setup in the final to finish a strong 2nd under lights.

Race 8 (Sportsman SA) was the smallest field for the evening with only the 6 entries. Nick Lacombe, despite a DNF in heat 1, took the chequred in 1st place with Micah Montgomery finishing in a strong second. Chris Provan finished 3rd and a great days driving by Georgia Robinson who kept the boys honest for the day.

Race 8 was time for Junior Sportsman to show what they are made of with gun youngster Jordan Murphy showing the way and putting on a stellar performance in his Rotax all day to take the round win. Holly Marquis pushed Murphy all the way and managed to keep the fast catching Luke Bergens behind her for the day. Racing was fast and furious with strong performances from all drivers.

Race 9 and 10 was time to bring out the Restricted 125 Light and Heavies for their battle on track. In the Lights the number 85 of Giuseppe Caon dominated the field winning every race in the Tony Kart. Coming home a strong second was P-plater Frankie Maiolo who had a great round and chased really hard all day. The unlucky Amber Hartley had a strong day and had the crowd rocking in race 3 and almost snatched the win until a spin with a lap to go put pay to that.

In the Heavies, Dale Compton caught the Lights and totally dominated the Heavies to take the win. Compton didn’t finish outside the top 2 for the day and easily won on points. Second was taken by Andrew Jericho and 3rd went to Ross Millar.

Race 11, the big boys and girls of motorsport, the Clubman Super Heavy class graced the track. Racing was full on as usual with no one giving an inch at any corner. Johnny Ellis took the round win by only a point over Paul Pittam who dropped a chain in race 2, but managed to win the other 3 races. Third went to Whyalla racer Redjepi with a consistent performance all day.

Race 12, Junior National Heavy came out to play with a dominant performance by Scotty Matheson followed closely by Jordan Murphy. Unfortunately Matheson came in under weight in heat 1 and was disqualified which handed Murphy the win for the weekend. Matheson went on to win the next 3 races with Murphy finishing second behind him. Third place went to the consistent and smooth Luke Bergans in the Tony Kart. This class is going to heat up at round 3 with drivers nose to tail on points.

Race 13 was the last race of the day with a strong field of Sportsman 125 Heavies. With 15 in the field it was going to be a busy time into turn 1. The class was dominated again by Luke Dillon and Paul Pittam with Dillon this time taking the win for the round with Pittam close behind in 2nd. Brandon Stillwell drove a brilliant round finishing 3rd for the Ian Williams camp. Lap times were fast and close with only 3 tenths separating the top 10 all day. Others to shine in the class were Simon Layne and David Camwell, who had strong finishes to the round.

Overall the day was full of magnificent highlights and a big pat on the back to all for making this round of the FSC one of the best ever by the BGKC. The club would like to thank all the officials, volunteers, canteen helpers and everyone who helped and was involved in the meeting.

On behalf of the BGKC thanks again and see you all on the 14th of July 2012 for the Night Titles.
