Sunfam Central Qld Championships - Round 2

from Darren Ey

A great field of 120 karts contested round 2 of the Sunfam Central Queensland Championships last weekend in Bundaberg with a wealth of talent. Local, state and Australian champions put on some great racing at the Drome Side Raceway, Bundaberg.

Cadets – Joel Jamieson was far too good for the field with 4 wins and Joshua Butler taking 4 seconds with the third spot on the podium being a battle of three with Declan James, Taylar Pearson and Bradley Balchin. With Taylar having a DNF in heat 1, she missed the podium by two points giving third to Declan James.

1 Joel Jamieson, 2 Joshua Butler, 3 Declan James

Rookies – This was one hotly contested class with these boys really setting a cracking pace, but at the end of a wonderful final Joshua Rodgers was too good and took first place from Harrison Oddie and Jayden Gollan. The stand out driver of the class was Lachlan Page who stuck it to the front runners all day and only just missed the podium.

1 Joshua Rodgers, 2 Harrison Oddie, 3 Jayden Gollan

Junior National Light – With 16 starters in this class and heaps of up and coming talent, we were in for some great racing and we weren’t disappointed, but at the end of the day Jacob Bright had too much pace for Jordi Macron and Russell Whittaker with the minor places being fought out to the last lap with only 5 points separating the next 4 drivers.

1 Jacob Bright, 2 Jodi Marcon, 3 Russell Wittaker

Junior National Heavy – This was a race of two all day with Conner Robertson and Cody Ey clearing out from the pack. Connor had the edge over Ey for most of the day until the pre final where it looked like Ey would take the win only to break a throttle cable which resulted in a DNF that put Cody out of contention. There were some great battles behind those guys with new comer Tom Zunker showing he will be a force to be reckoned with in coming race meetings.

1 Conner Robertson, 2 Tom Zunker, 3 Tristan Sticklan

Qld Sportsman Light – These guys were fast as usual but Troy Loeskows CIK experience did show and despite Brody Chardon working hard, he couldn’t quite deliver the goods to get to Loeskow.

1 Troy Loeskow, 2 Brody Chardon, 3 Mitchell Else

Qld Sportsman Heavy – Another field packed full of talent and early signs that Qld No 1 Clinton Marcon would wipe the field taking the first 3 races easily but what a final we had with Brenton Simonds coming out and giving it to Marcon with Simonds taking the final followed closely by Rylee Walton who was at the pointy end all day.

1 Clinton Marcon, 2 Brenton Simonds, 3 Rylee Walton

Qld Sportsman Super Heavy – The big boys didn’t let us down and Former Australian Number 1 Ryan Fulcher was too good over the day. Simon Obst did manage to steal the final from him with a brilliant move on the last lap. In form Super Heavy Rob Richards could only manage 4th on the day with the front runners having too much pace.

1 Ryan Fulcher, 2 Simon Obst, 3 Ray Fulcher

Leopard Light – a reasonably small class of Lights was on show with Jason Faint too good on the day.

1 Jason Faint, 2 Graham Prajbisz, 3 Mitchell Else

Leopard Heavy – With a good field of Leopards they were always going to have their work cut out with former Australia No 1 Kel Treseder in good touch. While Gaven Whitmore, Michael Doherty, Clinton Hancey, and Richard Tarrent put up a good fight, Treseder delivered the goods with his class showing through on his home track.

1 Kel Treseder, 2 Gaven Whitmore, 3 Michael Doderty

TaG Heavy and Light had small fields with David Roberts taking out the Heavy Class and Allan Christian the Lights.

Above: TaG-R class racers line up for a start - Adrian Maguire (33), final winner Jereme St Pierre (66), Dale Coomber (8), Paul Maguire (74), Kurt Williams (19) and Hayden Maguire (87).

TaG 125 Restricted @ 170 KG – This was another good field with the restricted boys putting on some great action and new comer Ryan Demarco from Bundaberg was a stand out taking a podium in his first major meeting.

1 Jereme StPierre, 2 Paul Maguire, 3 Ryan Demarco

Yamaha TaG 100 – These guys always have some close racing while sliding around on the old Dunlops and with all competitors traveling from Gladstone except Aiden Schelze from Rockhampton, he was going to have his work cut out. In the end Schelze was too good for the Gladstone boys and took out this class.

1 Aiden Schulze, 2 Rae Fothergrill, 3 Nathan Dunnett
