Vic Superkarts, Round 4Tweetpress release Round four of the Victorian Superkart Club's 2012 season was held at the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit on Saturday June 23. In what was an adventure-packed drive just managing to get to the circuit due to flooding on the South Gippsland highway, thirty drivers went the scenic route - and the day got away almost on time. Conditions at the track were fine all day except for the track being a little green after all the rain. In the 3 point motors sponsored 250 International class it was a mixed bag of results during the day with each driver winning a heat, so it was Marty Latta from a very quick Gary Pegoraro and first time twin driver Matt Bass.
In the 250 National class it was all Brendan Luneman who comfortably won all four races ahead of Scott and Dale Williams while Darren James, who made his return to Superkarting after a few years away, didn’t have the day he was looking for. In the Barry Plant Real Estate sponsored 125 Gearbox class it was a close day of racing between Gary Haywood and Kristian Stebbing with Stebbing finding the power he was looking for in the final to take out the day. In the Non Gearbox light class sponsored by Hold on to Life there was no catching Russ Occhipinti who put his hand on the trophy early in the day with Tom Cooper finding some fine form in second and Mark Vickers down from Sydney for some practice ahead of the Non Gearbox Nationals in September in third. Down the back in the Oz Design Nunawading sponsored class the racing at the front was all close and exciting Mike Godsell, Alan Dodge (also down from Sydney), Steven Milner, and eventual winner Paul Rodgers all having their crack at the pointy end of the field. The Non Gearbox nationals certainly looks like it will be a hotly contested event.
Also down for his first look at the Island was junior driver Quintin Slabbert from Queensland. Apart from wishing his kart was fitted with a heater he drove well all day and gradually improved his lap times. Unfortunately our regular juniors were all doing an admin day prior to their final round in November. The next round of the 2012 club series will be held at Calder Park on July 28 and spectators are welcome.
