The Molly Dooker 2012 Night Titles

by Danny Somerville

What a day and night of racing at the Molly Dooker Raceway in the Barossa Valley! Ninety-five entrants contested the 2012 running of the annual Night Titles on Saturday the 14th of July.

The event was proudly sponsored by Molly Dooker Wines and there were some great prizes up for grabs over the evening for the drivers proudly donated by Sparky Marquis of Molly Dooker Wines.

Racers were greeted with mixed weather conditions upon arrival with heavy rain peppering the Barossa track all week.

After a short shower before the carby session, it was time for the drivers to go out and tip-toe around the greasy track. There were a few who did a bit of rally-cross and drifting action but by the end of the session we had a dry track to go racing.

The day started with the little warriors of motorsports, the Rookies, gracing the track first off. There were some ding-dong battles in all 4 races for the minor positions with some mighty overtaking maneuvers. Josh Montague flew in all the heats and won the final to take the points from a fast finishing Jacob Dowsen in the new Arrow chassis. These two went head-to-head in the final with Dowsen reeling in Montague with 5 laps to go but Montague stayed cool under pressure to secure the win by around 10 kart lengths. 3rd place was hard fought between Kustom Karts driver Jordan Pianezzola, Jack Hutchens and Tyson Harvey with Pianezzola making the move with a couple laps to go to get on the podium. These drivers opened the show with gusto and set up the day for some awesome racing.

Race 2 on the program was the Clubman Heavy class with DBG team driver Clancy Venables dominating in all the heats to do it easily and win the night overall. Venebles won by over 10 kart lengths in every heat and turned it on for the final to take the win over former Closed State Champion Daniel Wallis who was as consistent as ever to finish 2nd in every heat including the final. 3rd was claimed by Russell Provan from the Spitwater team who had a great day keeping up with the front two.  Title sponsor Sparky Marques just could not dial the kart in and finished 4th for the class.

Race 3 was time for the Cadets to hit the track with 16 drivers entered for the day and they went for broke. The event was dominated by Jason Bowyer who cleaned up and showed a clean set of heals in every heat to take the title. It didnt matter whether Bowyer was drawn at the front or back of the grid, he still blitzed the field. A great night for the up and coming star Cooper Hay who battled his way to 2nd position with some consistent laps times in the final and held off the fast charging Amber Miller who did the girls proud with an amazing drive to finish in front of Nikki Watson. These girls really took it up to the boys who were consistently looking over their shoulders to see where they were. This class kept the crowd on its feet all night with some great celebrations by the parents after the meeting.

Race 4, Junior National Heavy, had a small field do battle with a total dominant performance by Scotty Matheson who gave the class a whipping and won the final by nearly half a lap from Ben Redjepi. Matheson set fastest lap after fastest lap and drove 10/10ths every lap to show the crowd how to race a J engine. He amazed the crowd with his consistent driving and pace and is one to watch out for at the up coming City of Adelaide Titles. Ben Redjepi returning from Darwin and drove strong to claim the second spot from Max Carter who went toe to toe with Redjepi all night. Dylan Hannan drove strong all night and kept the field honest despite being 12kgs heavy for the class.

Race 5, the Restricted 125 Light drivers, came out to play with a field of 7 to grace the track. It was a mixed bag of who will win the final with 3 different winners over the day. The final came down to who could get to corner 1 first and stay smooth and clean for the 15 laps. The 31 kart of Frankie Maiolo drove a flawless race to take the title and win by a close margin from an impressive performance from James Gorman who was catching Maiolo quickly but Maiolo just had enough gap at the end to take the chequred first. The class was nip and tuck all day and was one of the hardest fought classes for the day with many impressive performances including an excellent 3rd position for the P-plater Brayden Dichiera who drove out of skin in every race.

Race 6 was time for the big boys of motorsport to come out and wrestle - the Clubman Super Heavy class. With 9 in the class, racing was always going to be fierce with local favorite Johhny Ellis dominating the heats, but out of the blue came a drive out of the top draw by Simon Enright to win the final with a blistering drive from second place to take the Night Titles for the Super Heavies. It was carnage in the 1st corner of the final with a massive shunt, which took out no less than 5 drivers; it was lucky there were no injuries just some bruised egos. Runner up for the title was Johnny Ellis who just didn’t have the setup right for the final to catch Enright. Making up the podium was a strong drive from Ian Williams who was lapping quickly towards the end. These drivers all enjoyed a smooth Molly Dooker red wine after the meeting and shared some great yarns about the crash with others.

Race 7 was Sportsman SA with a field of 6 going out on the slippery SL1 tyres to do battle for their title and it was a clean sweep for Omega kart driver Anthony Williams. Williams won every heat and the final with a strong and consistent drive and drove some of the fastest laps driven by this class in the difficult conditions under lights. Williams took the 1st place from an impressive drive by Colin Gray who seems to thrive under lights at the Molly Dooker Raceway. The last podium position was secured by Nick Larcombe who drove well all day but just didn’t have enough legs in the final to trouble the top 2.

Race 8 Junior Max was blessed with only 2 drivers for the day with Max Carter and Ben Redjepi going for it on the track. They shared the wins in the heat races with Redjepi taking the honors in the final to claim the top spot.

Race 9 Clubman Light was one of the smallest classes for the evening with 2 of the fastest guys in SA, Daimon Goode and Jonathon French, going head-to-head. These guys traded fastest lap after fastest lap with Goode winning the final to take the honors for the day with French not far behind in second. A great Barossa debut drive for Tom Gur who raced well on her first drive under lights to get some valuable experience on the tight track and defiantly impressed on her first outing.

Race 10 the senior citizens of racing (Clubman Over 40s) came out to play with another great field of 7 going into battle. The racing was fast and furious amongst these gentlemen of the sport and I am sure the racing set some of their pacemakers into frenzy. Club President Steven Blee in The Tony Kart showed the field how it is done with his extensive skill and track knowledge to take the win with a clean sweep of all races. Club Vice President Johnny Ellis chased hard all night to catch Blee but with the extra weight he carried just didn’t have the straight-line speed to trouble Blee in the final. Craig Henderson drove well to secure a fine 3rd position in a tough field in his classic Omega kart. A horror night of racing was had for Simon Granfield who’s kart just didn’t want to go and Sparky Marquis who saw more gravel than an English beach, both failed to finish the final.

Race 11 on the program was The Restricted 125 Heavy class and these boys put on one hell of a show. With a big field of 9 runners it was always going to be full of incidents and cracking racing. Dale Compton was there about for most of the day but when it counted he found a break and took the chequred flag first to secure the win in the final. Chasing hard to an impressive 2nd place was David Rinaldi who was strong all day and was always challenging for the lead but just fell slightly short of the 1st position in the final but was a stellar performance. Alex Caminiti drove a great race to come in 3rd and take some wine home.

Race 12 was the last race for the evening and didn’t let the program down with a blitzing performance from Josh Denton who cleaned up in every race of Junior National Light to take the honors for the day. Denton drove a flawless drive in the final for TD Racing and looks a strong prospect for the upcoming City of Adelaide Titles and will be one of the favorites for the class win. 2nd place was taken by Jordan Tasker who challenged Denton during the day but didn’t quite have the pace in the final to catch Denton. The 55 of Brodie Cooke Challenged hard all day and took a strong 3rd place.

Overall the day had a great atmosphere and the crowd saw some of the best kart racing you can see in South Australia.

The Barossa Go Kart Club would like to especially thank Sparky Marquis and the Molly Dooker Wines crew for all their support and prizes for the event and for the year.

The club would like to thank all the competitors for entering this great event, the officials, the canteen staff and all the helpers who assisted with the event on the day - wWithout their support and help we can’t go racing so thanks again.
