Wyatt and Sapwell  Win Clubman Cup

from Stuart Lee

In two of the most enthralling finals for the year, Launceston’s Zane Wyatt (Heavy) and Hobart’s Luke Sapwell (Light) have won the 2012 "Auto Addiction" Clubman Cup.

Wyatt, the 2004 winner, claimed the win ahead of defending title holder Mitchel Evans and Aiden Shelton (also from Launceston), however the battle for victory included up to eight drivers, each taking their turn at the front in what was one of the best finals seen for many years.

Clubman Light winner Sapwell came from grid five in the final to defeat Brody Appleby (Devonport) and Alastair Lee (Launceston) in another tightly contested final, the lead changing almost every lap with firstly Appleby taking the early lead and later with Lee heading the field with three laps to go. Defending three-time winner Nathan Zuj was also amongst the action however a pass under yellows in the early laps resulted in a two place relegation taking him from second to fourth in the final standings.

For the first time this year Junior Clubman was on the programme. The win went to Hobart’s Nicky Richards ahead of Jacob Morris (Burnie) and Brad Hobden (Hobart). Richards was a clear favourite heading into the meeting however he did not have thing all his own way with some very tight heat races.

Over 40 Clubman produced the only real clear winner with Launceston‘s Alfredo Cocca dominating. Cocca defeated fellow LKC members Graham Hoar and Dave Sherriff. The field also included Michael Dalton having his first run in fifteen years; apparently the coffee got the work out all day.

A 20 lap Clubman pro (150kg) race was held at the end of the day with 22 drivers on the grid. The win went to Hobart driver Trent Palmer who had to battle his way to the front after starting mid pack. Second went to Mitchel Evans, also from Hobart, and third was local Launceston member Jamie Bricknell.

Support classes were won by Lachlan DALTON (Cadets) from Brock LAMONT and Callum BISHOP. Tayla HEATH dominated Rookies winning from Zevie EISENTRAUT and Justin MURPHY. JNL was won by Wade Mclean from Bodie Reading and Gemma Wyllie. JNH was taken out by Morgan JAKOBOVSKI from James FITCH and Joseph ARMSTRONG. TAG Restricted Light went to Michael WARREN from Andrew SHERRIFF and third to Grant MCGLASSON. TAG Restricted Heavy was won by Matthew CLARK second to Graham HOAR and third Thomas WALTER. Peter ROGERS defeated Michael GORRIE and Wayne FISHER to win Over 40 pro, while Scott WRIGLEY won Over 40 Super Heavy from Garry LEE and Darren WILLIAMS
