Sabré Cooks Remains In SKUSA Pro Tour Chase

press release

The very important key to becoming a great driver is the ability to be consistent every time you take to the track, posting the same lap times over and over while keeping yourself in the hunt. Colorado driver Sabré Cook continues to show her proficiency behind the wheel with another solid weekend at the Superkarts! USA Pro Tour.

The 2012 SKUSA SummerNationals took place on July 20-22 at the Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, with the top shifterkart drivers in North America contesting the event. Cook began the season with two runner-up finishes at the SpringNationals earlier this year to secure the S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto point lead. Adding another trip to the podium for her third straight runner-up finish helped the CRG-USA driver to secure the championship lead heading into the series finale.

The weekend began with Cook among the contenders right away, pacing her CRG Road Rebel toward the top rung of the timing sheets during practice on Friday. Cook gave herself 10 points in the championship chase by securing the pole position for round three action on Saturday, posting a 56.900-second lap. After leading the first few laps of heat one, Cook relinquished the lead and would settle in to finish a comfortable second place in the opening 10-lap run. The second heat saw Cook lose one spot from the starting launch. Running third, she kept her composure and secured the third spot for the start of the main event. The start to the main event saw three-wide action with the field funneling into the opening corners. Thankfully, Cook was able to remain in the third position and not suffer any issues. After the opening lap, she settled down and began her quest for victory. By lap eight, Sabré was up to the second position and began chasing down the leader who had built up over a one-second advantage. Lap after lap, Cook closed up on the leader and eventually made her way on the leader’s bumper. Unable to find a clean way pass the leader, Cook settled for her third straight runner-up finish and added to her championship lead.

Round four action began a little different for Cook as she found herself looking up to the front of the field. After placing fourth in qualifying with a 57.141-second lap, she was slow off the line to begin heat one and dropped to ninth in the opening lap. She would fight hard to place sixth. Sabré and mechanic Kimball Williams made the right changes between heat races as Sabré moved herself up to third for an inside row two starting position in the main event. Once the lights went out, Cook secured her third position through the opening corners and looked to battle forward in the four-kart lead pack. By lap three, Cook managed to pass for the second position and began pressuring the leader. Lap by lap, Sabré kept the pressure on and was waiting for the right moment to make her move. On lap 16 however, her Honda engine began to cut out at certain positions around the course. After losing two positions, she continued the following lap, only to have the same issue return. By lap 18, the lack of power grew even worse and forced her to pull off track. The heartbreak for what could have been her first Pro Tour victory was caused by the carburetor that worked itself free from the engine.

Thankfully, the fourth round results are calculated as her one drop round, in the best four of five championship chase. When factoring in the drop race, Sabré leads the Pro Tour championship chase by 45 points heading into the series finale, the famed SKUSA SuperNationals XVI on November 14-18 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
