NSW State Cup (Metro) - Round 3Tweetfrom Peter Galvin NSKC hosted the third round of the NSW State Cup last weekend. A small number of karters entered for the meeting compared to our normal club day, but that didn't stop some fantastic racing. The meeting was scheduled to run over the Saturday and Sunday, however all the drivers and officials did a great job allowing the race meeting to be run and won in just one day. Everyone was happy to have the Sunday free!
Sportsman Light and Heavy Light Heavy Trent Grubel recoverd from an average qualy to end up on the top step of the podium in the Lights with Hewitt very close behind him. It could have gone either way as the two drivers fought it out till the last lap. Kozlinski put in a great effort to get 3rd. In Heavies, Saller had an up and down day but finally got it together to take out the final over a much improved Atkins and the ever present Walls.
Junior National Heavy 1st Dimitri Agathos Dimitri Agathos had a tough time in Qualy running off the track in the opening few laps. This would place him in 10th to start the days racing. Some very entertaining racing was to take place with plenty of overtaking from the JNH guys and girls. Shwartz did very well and was unlucky in one heat with a side pod coming loose slowing his charge. Kennedy chipped away all day to get himself on the podium but it was Agathos who continually drove through the field and in the end won by a margin posting a faster time than the pole time in Qualy!
Clubman light 1st Nathan Tigani Two words for this class - Nathan Tigani. He simply dominated the races. Not only did he put his machine on pole but he then smashed the rest of the field winning each race by some distance. In fact, at one stage he was pushed back to second last off the start, but still drove back through with ease to again win by a margin - he passed four karts in one corner! Davidson put up a fight but could only manage 2nd after winning the week before at CIK at the 150kg weight. Seiffert was a big improver showing good pace to get 3rd.
Clubman Heavy 1st Trent Rogers Trent Rogers beat Jason Varley in a very disappointing Heavy field. At a normal club day the club sees 18 Heavies on the track but this day they must have all been on holidays!
Cadets 1st Benito Montalbano Well these kids put on some fantastic racing. Montalbano was the class of the field however streaking away in the final leaving the rest to fight for the minor placings and fight they did. Worton, Sargent, Whitmore, Lobko all put in some great moves as did Lichtenberger and Hodgson. They all swapped places nearly every lap leaving the mums and dads watching holding their breath. In the end though Litchy got the best run home and grabbed second with Hodgson right there with him.
Junior National Light 1st Cody Gillis Another great class to watch go racing. These kids leave nothing in the pits and really had everyone on the edge watching. Jayden Ojeda had lots of pace but ended the day watching as did Andreas Chronis. Those two drivers really where the ones to watch in the early stages of the day, Chronis on pole by 3 tenths! When it came to the final however Gillis took the win over a gutsy Morse. Steele could have won as well but settled for 3rd in a very exciting race.
Rookies 1st Zac Raddatz More great racing was delivered from the younger drivers. Raddatz and Brewzinski cleared out early and it would come down to the last lap. Cody took the lead and Zac took it back with 1 lap remaining with a brave move up at the carousel. Morgan fought off Bonser and Bennett to get 3rd.
Senior National Light 1st Sarah Collins Two drivers didn't finish on the podium in this one, one was left sitting on the tyres the other would cross the line first. Sarah Collins had plenty of pace and showed her Closed State Titles was no fluke. She would dice with Aaron Borg for first and Justin Tigani (points leader) made his way into the top 3 then disaster struck with Tigani and Borg coming together. This would leave Tigani sitting it out and Borg in the lead, Collins hot on his tail. Harris just sat patiently waiting for his oppoortunty to come but it never did. Collins took the lead with a couple of laps to go but Borg would have nothing to do with taking it back at the next corner. That's how they crossed the line Borg, Collins, Harris, Pritchard. A later hearing would see Borg excluded from the final handing the win to Collins. So that rounds out the State Cup. We now look forward to the big night time event the Eastern Creek Karting Showdown!
