Ipswich News & August Races

from John Goddard

It has been a very busy time for the Ipswich committee. They worked very hard to get the August meeting across the line as a day night meeting to take advantage of the V8 Supercar Coates Hire Ipswich 300 just down the road but it wasn’t to be, the lighting gods and the AKAQ had other ideas.

Ipswich found themselves a little short of stewards and Club President Ashley Waardenberg has asked me to thank all the officials that attended and made particular mention of Chris Robinson who just turned up out of the blue, Robbo stayed all day to ensure the meeting could proceed as planned.

One positive aspect of the heavy traffic conditions with the crowd simultaneously leaving the V8’s as our meeting finished was that there was a bigger attendance than usual at the trophy presentation. The Karter’s sat it out and enjoyed a beer and sausage sandwich rather than sit in the traffic congestion for hours.

Many thanks to all the volunteers and officials who ensured the meeting was a great success.

As usual, there were big fields across all classes but the meeting was abandoned after an unfortunate accident with 3 finals still to be run.

Cadet John Carnevale was on the track for over an hour while the medical team and officials took every precaution to ensure the wellbeing of the young first time racer.

On the positive side, I have been told that John is OK with some muscle damage and bruising and I believe one of his first things he said to his dad was “how bad is the kart and when can we get out there again?”

Hope to see you back at the track soon mate, with that sort of spirit you will go a long way in this sport.

Administration Assistant

Also related to the future sustainability of IKC, and as discussed at the last General Meeting, we have been investigating our clubs potential to employ an Administration Assistant to perform a number of duties for the club that are otherwise very time-consuming and mean that all the greater strategies for improving this club are much slower than they need to be.

It must also be said that managing Ipswich Kart Club is not trivial, it is a very large club and there are many demands that are difficult for everyone to attend to, especially as everyone seems to have less time in the modern world of increased work commitment.

This trend has important implications for the future sustainability of managing Ipswich Kart Club and thus it is important to us that we are prepared for changes in Management and time-available from Volunteers. At present all aspects of this position, financial and delegated duties, are being investigated and details will come shortly to be tabled at a general meeting. Keep an eye on this space.

The Meeting

The classes dropped from this meeting were the Clubman classes.

The weather was fantastic for racing with all fields very competitive but especially Junior National Light with 31 competitors, Senior J and TAG 125 Light with current state title holders Ben Stewart and Kris Walton coming back to their roots of club racing.

RACE REPORT

Rookies
The Rookie class was very competitive with 3 different winners over the 4 races. It came down to who would win the final out of Caleb Mustow-Veal, Damon Ash or Jasper Winnett and it was Mustow-Veal who prevailed with Ash a close second and Winnett third.

TAG 125 Restricted Light
TaG Restricted Light had 23 entrants with Matthew Klein, even after having a few months out of the kart, showing that he’s still got what it takes to run at the front, taking first for the day.  Andrew Morgan had a consistent drive all day to finish second, only to announce that he will be hanging up his boots and focusing on his son’s racing. Donnelle Waldon showed her consistency by taking a great third for the day.

Junior National Heavy
Junior National Heavy had a strong field of 13 racers but it was a runaway win to Nicholas Andrews taking out all 4 heats in front of the ever competitive Dean Wiegman for second with Jack Ah Quay a solid third.

TAG 125 Restricted Heavy
A great field of 22 competed hard in this class with a very solid showing from P-plater Christopher Were with some great results of 4th, 6th and 5th. Ashley Richards was looking good to take out the day coming into the final with 2 wins under the belt but a DNF put paid to that scenario. Karl Kerswell took the big trophy with a 3rd, two seconds and a win in the final, Richards was second for the day with Craig Holmwood third.

Senior National @ 150kg
What a stellar field of Senior Nationals, the field of 14 studded with current and former state title holders and the ever consistent club champion in Richard Dimmock. Sean Butcher and Oliver Etter shared the spoils with 2 wins each but Butcher’s second in the final gave him the win for the day from Etter with James Foster in third. Alexandra Whitley was fast all day and finished 4th overall.

Cadets
With 21 Cadets entered for the Saturday meeting including 7 P-platers there was always going to be some great action throughout the youngest field. New karters, Blake Day, Jett Tippett, Boyd Chaffey, Mitchell Tame and John Carnevale have joined our Cadet class for 2012.

Unfortunately an incident in the final with young John Carnevale had the race red flagged so he could be attended too. From all reports John is fine and all he wanted to know was if his kart was ok and when can he race again so John I trust you will have a speedy recovery and hopefully we will see you at the next round.

There were some great battles at the front with Lismore racer and new NT state Champ Nathan Herne, Rockhampton rocket Joel Jamieson, Josh Radford and testing the new Arrow X2, Harrison Hoey. There was also good results and some strong racing from Lachlan Hughes, Broc Feeney with Oscar Comely snapping at their heels. In the mid pack were the ever improving Wilcox brothers Sean Bolger, Declan Matthews, Zak Hudson, Benjamin Deissler, Rusty Ross always improving. With another great result being 1st P plater home Jacinta Hoey.
All points counted and you could drop you worst for the day with final Placing 1st Nathan Herne 2nd Harrison Hoey 3rd Joel Jamieson. See you all at the next round SEQ 2012 Cadet / Rookie Titles.

Junior National Light
Wow, 31 Juniors and there is a movement to get rid of J’s - are they kidding?

In this class there were only 29 competitors at the Qld State Titles and we matched the numbers at the recent NT State and National Titles, a really great effort from all the kids. As I have said before, the future of the sport is in good hands with this many juniors turning up to race. Now all we need is some leadership to take advantage of these wonderful club fields.

The kids didn’t get a final in but William Brown already had two heat wins to sew up the day followed in by Zane Goddard in second place and Ben Wilcox for third. It is impossible to mention everyone but they did very well when you consider that there was only one DNF in the Pre-final. Great work guys and gals.

Tag 125 Light
What an interesting mix of drivers for our impressive 21 strong field for round five of the club championship. Trent Mercer, who hasn’t driven for two years, took over the drive from his brother Adam, to punch out a solid performance. Shaun McNamara had a maiden run in his new Intrepid Chassis which put him closer to the pointy end but his partner in crime Ashley Lester, had a shocker and exited with a blown engine. Pole sitter Bodine Antrobus was unable to follow through on his recent good form as he was plagued with some mechanical issues throughout the day. After touring the country and racing at various state and national titles, the very polished and competitive Ben Stewart and V8 ute pilot Kris Walton took time out to revisit club racing to show they have got what it takes with Stewart winning the day from Walton with Trent Mercer a great third and Shaun McNamara fourth.

TAG 125 HEAVY
The “big fellas” was a hotly contested class with 17 racers taking to the track. Anyone of 5 of these competitors could have won this event but with the unfortunate accident to the young Cadet, this class did not get to race their final but everyone understood the importance of making sure the kid was ok. Scott Howard, while not winning a race, won the class through shear consistency with 3 seconds. Daniel Creed, Patrick Mather, Ashley Waardenberg and Nathan Waldon fought it out for second and third with Creed and Mather filling the minor spots.
