Heat Is On For National Dirt Track Titles

press release

Organisers of the National Dirt Track Go Karting Championships in September are feeling a little ‘hot under the collar’ today after a close call with fierce bush fires yesterday.

The Mount Isa Go Kart Clubs track, club house and facilities had a very close call when fast moving fires pushed by moderate winds spread from a neighbouring creek bed to their grounds and the surrounds yesterday around mid-morning.

With less than three weeks to go until the hosting of the 2012 AKA National Dirt Track Championships, the Club was sweating on the efforts of the dedicated fire and rescue teams of the city to save their Club.

Escaping with the loss of mains power and approximately 70 metres of tyre barricades, the Mount Isa Go Kart Club is now in repair mode with the Championships countdown on.

Local businesses have been quick to respond to the Club's call for assistance with local tyre suppliers promptly donating used car tyres to make new barricades and the team from Ergon Energy quickly responding to the President's call yesterday afternoon, indicating that new poles and lines would be installed promptly.

“We were lucky to have such a responsive fire crew. Without their quick action to divert the fire and water the grounds we could have been a lot worse off” said Mount Isa Go Kart Club President Shane Thirlwall.

“We would like to send out a big thank you to all of the teams that responded to the fire and the businesses and club members who have quickly put their hands up to get the track back in A1 condition.

" The Championships are still on track to be a stellar event and we would like to invite all competitors and spectators to come along” said Shane.

The 2012 AKA National Dirt Track Championships will be hosted at the Mount Isa Go Kart Track on Bendall Drive September 7-9, with heat action on Saturday and finals action on Sunday.
