Kiwi Karter Makes Strong Start At KZ2 World Cup

Kiwi karter Daniel Bray has enjoyed a strong start at the 2012 CIK-FIA World Cup meeting for KZ2 kart race meeting at Sarno in Italy, winning his first qualifying heat race on Friday afternoon.

Bray, 25, the reigning New Zealand KZ2 class sprint champion who drives for the works GP Karts team, was immediately competitive in practice on Thursday, claiming the eighth quickest time in his first two sessions then the sixth quickest time in the third, before being fourth quickest in the first session on Friday morning, 17th in the second then topping the time sheets in the third.

He then set the second quickest lap time in his first official qualifying practice session - making him fourth overall out of 107 entrants - and won his first qualifying heat.

Topping qualifying in the KZ2 class was Swedish driver Viktor Oberg from Max Verstappen, the son of former Formula 1 driver Jos, from The Netherlands, the first of the strong Italian contingent, Felice Tiago, and Bray.

Kyle Endsby was the best of the two Australian entries, qualifying in 73rd position with compatriot Ricky Capo 85th.

The 96 drivers still in contention now have four more qualifying heats today (Saturday) from which the top 34 will go on to the Pre-Final and Final on Sunday.
