With the rev of engines and smell of two stroke oil abating, the 2012 AKA National Dirt Track Go Kart Championships are a wrap.

Deemed a huge success by organisers the Mount Isa Go Kart Club, the weekend saw over sixty of the nation’s top dirt track karters go head to head in two days of racing action.

Saturday’s heats saw their share of thrills and spills as competitors battled it out to start at the front of Sunday morning’s semi-final grids.

Racing for the coveted ‘green title plates’ saw the Clubman Heavy, Clubman Super Heavy and Junior National Light classes set to thrill. Heading into the semi-final, South Australian Adem Redjepi and local Mount Isan Paul White (Clubman Super Heavy) were neck and neck with only one point difference separating them, and the Clubman Heavy and Junior National Light classes were just as closely matched.

With a first place in the semi, number 96 Emily Obrien of Mount Isa went into the final as favourite in the Junior National Light class, taking home the title with a points lead of five. Number 46 Paul White from Mount Isa held out Adem Redjepi to take out the Clubman Super Heavy class and retained the national title. Number 22 Thomas Glasson took home the Clubman Heavy national title from a field of twelve with a lead of ten points.

In the support classes number 21 Mark Ezzy from Cairns took out TAG100 in a nail bitting finish; number 19 Lochlan Dew Sam from Mount Isa took out the Cadets, eleven year old Jordan Dew number 20 took home the Rookies trophy and Callum Barr from Mount Isa went home with the Junior Clubman trophy.

Kudos goes out to the huge team of volunteers, officials and sponsors who made the weekend a reality. The grandstands were filled to capacity with crowds enjoying the running commentary from popular local Fred Frost.

A special thanks from Mount Isa Go Kart Club committee went out to all the competitors that travelled long distances from across the country to make the incident free weekend one that will go down in the record books as ‘one of the best’.
