The polesitters for the finals at the 2012 New South Wales Open Sprint Kart Championships have been decided in Coffs Harbour today.

More than 250 competitors have assembled at the event across the 13 categories, with qualifying and the opening round of heats held yesterday each driver contested another 11-lap heat this morning ahead of the 17-lap pre-finals this afternoon.

Victorian youngster Dylan Hollis grabbed the lead from pole position at the start of the Rookies pre-final – a spot he held for the duration of the race. Queenslander Harrison Oddie showed some good speed late in the race to charge his way to second place ahead of Cody Brewczynski.

While next weekend he’ll be in action aboard a V8 Ute around Mount Panorama in Bathurst, this weekend Kris Walton is dicing it out on the kart track in the Clubman Heavy and Leopard Heavy categories. He will start from pole position in the 24-lap Clubman Heavy final tomorrow, and second position in the Leopard Heavy final alongside Brendan Nelson, who won today’s pre-final.

Nelson made it two wins for the day with victory ahead of local driver Dale Corbett in the Rotax Heavy category.
After swapping the lead on a number of occasions in the Junior National Light pre-final it was Darwin driver Bryce Fullwood got the better of a race-long battle with Liam McLellan to cross the line first.

Crossing the line third was Top Kart driver Josh Car ahead of James Abela, who led a six-kart freight train late in the race.

However, further drama was to occur for the leading pair when they were penalised 10 seconds for a starting infringement dropping them to seventh and 11th respectively. Car will therefore be starting from pole position for the all-important final tomorrow.
