 AKA media

Queenslander Brendan Nelson and New South Wales driver Joseph Mawson shared the spoils with two victories a piece at the NSW Open Sprint Kart Championships in Coffs Harbour today.

Toowoomba-born Nelson dominated the Rotax Heavy category but his win in the Clubman Heavy ranks was far less straight-forward.

Nelson’s fellow Queenslander Kris Walton took advantage of his pole position in the 24-lap final to lead the early running.  It wasn’t long however, before it became a five-way battle for the lead between Walton, Matthew Waters, Daniel Nolan, Brendan Nelson and Joshua Crossingham.  Arrow Karts driver Nelson moved into the lead before being chased down by Waters late in the race and after the pair swapped the lead several times it was Nelson took a narrow victory.

“I raced three classes across the weekend, so you can’t ask for much more that two wins and a second,” said Nelson.

“The last time I raced here was six or seven years ago in Junior Clubman. I didn’t really have the pace in the Clubman Heavy heat races but when Kris Walton and Matt Waters got together I made the most of the opportunity and was able to drive away with the win.

“These two wins today makes it ten state championships for me in my career.”

Mawson, competing in the Clubman Light and Rotax Light categories, emerged from a frantic opening lap in the Rotax Light final as the leader.  Reigning National Champion Pierce Lehane showed some good speed late in the race but it wasn’t enough to chase down Mawson.  Tyler Greenbury was third.

In the Clubman Light ranks it was a case of youth versus experience with Mawson and Jaie Robson lining up alongside the likes of karting veterans Nick Agland and Jason Burns.

Robson led the opening few laps but when Agland clipped the back of his kart in the final turn it allowed Mawson the opportunity to move into the lead.  Then when Burns and Brock Plumb came together on lap nine in the middle section of the circuit Plumb upended his Arrow kart and ended the race for both competitors.

In the end, Mawson took a comfortable victory over Matthew Waters, who moved into second when Robson and Dean O’Brien came together late in the race.

“I haven’t quite had a good year, so to come away with two wins in my home state title is an awesome feeling,” said Mawson.

“I didn’t get a good start in the Clubman Light final but I was fortunate to get a break and never looked back from there.”
