Country Series Round 5

press release

The Hamilton Karting Club welcomed 99 entrants to Buckley Park Raceway at the weekend for the 16th annual Handbury Titles.

With the weather changing from magnificent sunshine on Saturday, to wet, windy and wild conditions on Sunday, the drivers had a tough elemental challenge while trying to get the best out of their karts.

The race meeting also acted as round four of the Victorian Country Series, with the headline race being the Graham and Kathleen Millard Memorial for the Clubman Over 40s class.

The contenders had three heats before the final in each of the 13 classes, and the racing was close and intense in the lead up races before the main events, as the drivers battled hard to try and qualify in the best possible position.

Mt Gambier Karting Club's Glenn Henley took home the perpetual trophy and sash for winning the Graham and Kathleen Millard Memorial, flying over the line in the final in front of Leon Forrest, with Hamilton's Ron Taylor in third.

The Clubman Heavy class final was won by Christopher Thomas, who had made the long trek from Oakleigh, crossing the line clear of John Dankowski and Jacob Witherow, while the Clubman Light was taken out by Ben Kilsby who drove past Hamilton's Harley Benson on the final corner, Tyler Cramer finishing third. Scott King from Portland won the final of the Sportsman Heavy class, beating home Stephen Jones-Sexton and Andrew Jackson.

Michael Angwin had all the speed in the Sportsman Restricted Super Heavy final, with Hamilton's own Andrew Hayes storming home for second prize in front of Billy Askew.

Owen Edge kept the Mt Gambier club's good fortune flowing with a win in the Sportsman Restricted Heavy class, with Daniel McKean and Barry Clough chasing him home.

The Sportsman Light class was won by Corey McCullagh, who reached the chequered flag clear of Ashley Lear and Brian Ramsden, while the Sportsman Restricted Light saw Tim McCarthy hold off Brock Rae and Jett Speed.

The younger drivers were also out in force, providing lots of great racing for the onlookers.

The Junior National Heavy class saw Zac Souter take home first place, with Mitchell Broome and Joseph Clough battling it out for the minor placing’s, while Braydon North won the Junior National Light class, outclassing Shaun Costello and Jack Nolan.

Everyone has to start somewhere, and in a great sign for the future of karting, the Rookie and Cadet classes of races had strong fields tearing around the track.

Tyler O'Leary won the Cadets class final from Michael Clemente and Ben Micallef, while in the Rookies final, it was Dylan Hollis who took the prize, with some nice driving from Nicholas Cardamone and Jay Coul to finish second and third respectively.

Hamilton's Harley Benson, who leads the Victorian Country Series' Sportsman Light class with two races to go, was very happy with the weekend. "The club had 99 entries for the weekend, and the weather was fantastic on Saturday.

"Sunday's weather wasn't though, so the drivers all had to change to wet weather tyres, which slowed the racing down a bit. "The whole event went really well, we had a fair few people come out and watch, which was terrific," he said.

The series now goes on to Ballarat on October 21
