Whyalla Club Championship Round

from Dave Camwell 9 October 2012

Perfect weather for kart meeting

Perfect weather greeted the karters for the Whyalla Club Championship round 6 race meeting. Twenty drivers rolled up from Whyalla, Adelaide and Port Pirie to try and take out their respective class win and accumulate points to add to the 8 round series.

The day got under way in spectacular fashion, with 14 karters taking to the track. There was first corner mayhem with many drivers thinking they could win the race in the first few seconds, which of course claimed many drivers and side lined them for the remainder of the race.

After a quick additional drivers briefing from the chief steward, the day moved on to some good fast clean racing.

Five Cadets and one Rookie raced together hard and fast, with Levi Henderson being the only Rookie entered in the class, which did not stop him from showing how fast this young driver can drive; he easily blitzed the Cadet field and finished well ahead of the pack. The five Cadet drivers, aged between 7 and 10, raced a fantastic meeting, with Adelaide driver Troy Fortanier taking out the class. Tyler Craig is becoming a regular at our meetings and took out second, Aaron Oliver also from Adelaide took out the final podium step for third.

Fourteen senior drivers racing in 3 different divisions entertained the crowd, and other than the first race first corner incident, there was little contact between karts - although some drivers pushed themselves to their ultimate limit and consequently lost control of their race machines, the only damage being their pride.

The track condition was perfect for racing and three track records were broken. Dennis Cumerlato smashed out a time of 26.275 seconds in Restricted 125 Light. Dave Camwell broke the track record in both directions of racing. In the normal race direction running in the Restricted 125 Heavy class, he set a time of 26.532 seconds and in reverse racing, a time of 26.489 seconds was scored. Ellen Shipard set a personal best time in Restricted 125 Light, 26.787 seconds in normal direction and 26.908 in reverse.

Allan Watt and Neil Schmidt opted to be officials to help run the meeting as our normal helpers for these positions could not attend. Many thanks to these two for not electing to race and give up their time to run the meeting!

Above: Dennis Cumerlato must have been taking it a little too easy, he appears to be having a little snooze, just before he crossed the finish line (eyes shut and head back). Nice one Mr President!

Once again, thanks must go out to Kerri Pitman, Frank Baker, Walter Sossa, Andy Leech, Jeff Redjepi, Melissa Stewart, Jessica and Carmen, for your help as officials and canteen staff.
