Aussie (Friday) Update From ROK Cup

from Dennis Sandrone 13 October 2012

Aussie update from South Garda heats from Friday October 12

The Tony Kart Australian contingent have been testing and racing in dry warm conditions enjoying the best of Italy’s Autumn weather. Unfortunately overnight rain threw a spanner in the works for all concerned.

Whilst the weather was clearing, all four Junior Rok drivers had their chance to face the wet conditions for the first time in the first heats.

Cody Gillis was first up. Starting from position 4 Cody was dealt a cruel blow with engine failure before facing the start. The conditions then dried for Cody’s other heats with a 7th (after again being relegated at the start again due to some starting issues with the kart) posting the 3rd fastest lap. In the next 2 heats Cody managed 5th in both with 2nd and 3rd fastest times respectively.

Starting in the second wet heat were the remaining three, Andy Kahl starting 4th, Chris Sandrone 9th and Kurt Kosteki starting 20th. All boys adapted quickly with Chris Sandrone finishing 3rd followed by a fast finishing Andrew Kahl 4th with Kurt Kosteki having an exceptional drive through the field or 6th.

Andrew Kahl then finished his next 2 heats 4th and 3rd posting respectable competitive times. Andrew does have one heat to complete tomorrow. Chris Sandrone finished his next 2 heats 9th and 7th respectively with also a heat to complete tomorrow. Kurt Kostecki finished his next 2 heats in 12th and 14th respectively with a additional heat to run on the final day.

Mini Rok driver Jack Bell was also dealt some bad luck today. Jack was in 3rd place in the last lap of first heat only to be involved in a racing incident. In rejoining the circuit well down the field, Jack rejoined by cutting out a small portion of the track earning an exclusion from the heat. Jack’s day didn’t improve finishing 21st and 11th in the next heats. Whilst disappointed, Jack’s been the surprise packet of the tour. Unfortunately today’s results do not show Jack’s constant speed shown over the last few days. Jack will start the T-Kart Mini Rok final in 11th, but unfortunately missing out in the Mini Rok final.

Travis Millar finished his heats in 7th , 20th and 14th in the unforgiving Super Rok class and will start the Super Rok final from a credible 17th. The race was extremely tough with drivers being overtaken giving very little room!
