  18 October 2012

“Why go slower when you can go faster”

Great racing was the order of the day for round four of the 2012 NSW Yamaha Junior Clubman Series held at Wollongong Raceway on 14 October.  Whilst the field was reduced in size, valuable points were up for grabs and the competition was fierce.

The standout performance in qualifying was Hayden Sunderland who was making his debut in the series, and he mastered the slippery early morning conditions with aplomb to lock down third spot on the grid behind Dimitri Agathos and Reagan Angel.

The heat results had a familiar feel with Agathos and Angel finishing one two. The pre-final however, saw Brodie Tilbrook come through in his new FA kart to take the win, followed by Agathos and Angel.  So the scene was set for a great 20 lap final.

And so it turned out.  Tilbrook led from the start with Agathos and Angel following along in line astern.  Just behind Lachlan Gibbons was showing great speed in his new Kosmic chassis and had been improving all day as he adapted to the feel of the new kart.  Sunderland and Damon Schofield were right with Gibbons and this mid pack battle turned into one of the battles of the day.  Caitlin Wood had struggled with kart set up all day but her ability behind the wheel meant she was sticking with the boys when in counted in the final and Scott Harris had recovered from his DNF in the pre-final to be right with the pack.

Into the last lap Tilbrook had a clear break but defensive tactics by him through the last two corners gave Agathos the scent of victory.  He made a bold move around the outside of the last corner and onto the straight, and in an exciting finish they crossed the line side by side with Tilbrook the victor by only 5/100th of a second.  Third was Angel with Gibbons and Sunderland filling the podium.  Once again the Junior Clubman series had produced a great race for the spectators.

Thanks to Yamaha and the round sponsors Karting World.  All of the drivers have thoroughly enjoyed the big fields and close racing and they look forward to the last round of the NSW Yamaha Junior Clubman Series to be held at Lithgow on 18 November.
