Karters Head South For State Honours Next Weekend

South Australia’s second most populated city, Mount Gambier, will grow even more next week (November 2-4) when kart racers and their families head to the home of the Blue Lake to contest the 2012 South Australian Open Sprint Kart Championships.

Almost 200 competitors will line up on the grid for the prestigious event that will see drivers as young as seven compete in the Cadets category at speeds in excess of 80 km/h around the 760-metre Glenburnie Raceway.
Included in the 21-driver field of Cadets will be three current state or territory champions – Victorians Josh Smith and Jai Sparey, who won the Victorian and Queensland championships respectively, and Lismore’s Joshua Herne who won the Northern Territory Title in July. Also on the entry list is Jack Doohan, son of five-time World 500cc Motorcyle Champion Mick Doohan and fellow Queenslander Harrison Hoey, who finished runner-up in the Western Australian Championships earlier this month.

Second-generation racer Callan Belmonte and fellow Mount Gambier drivers Morgan Feast and Joshua Munn will fly the local flag in the largest field of the event – Junior National Light.

The trio will line up against some of the country’s top young drivers in the category including multiple-time state champion Bryce Fullwood, Victorians Reece Sidebottom and William Hawkes.

The large fields of junior drivers is something that the Australian Karting Association’s South Australian President Ian Williams is extremely proud of.

“To see almost 200 drivers, including so many junior drivers, lining up at our state championship from all different parts of the country is very pleasing,” said Williams.

“The Mount Gambier track is considered to be one of the best on the country and all the drivers really enjoy racing at the challenging circuit. The Mount Gambier club last hosted this prestigious event in 2006 and when it held the National Titles in 2000 drivers such as Mark Winterbottom, Steve Owen and Taz Douglas, all of whom are now racing V8 Supercars were in action.

“Over the past few months I know everyone in the club has been working very hard to put on a top event and next weekend should be a fantastic event with many recent improvements to the facilities now being completed.”

Drivers, teams, families and support crews will begin arriving in Mount Gambier next Tuesday (October 30) afternoon before practice is contested on Wednesday and Thursday ahead of qualifying and racing over Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Glenburnie Raceway is located on the Princes Highway at Glenburnie (just East of Mount Gambier) opposite the speedway.
