Burnie To Host State Championships Next Weekend

Burnie’s Hardings Hotmix Kartway will be invaded by kart racers from all across the state, and numerous visitors from the mainland, for the 2012 Spreyton Fresh Tasmanian State Championships next weekend (November 16-18).

A total of 171 entries have been received across the 12 categories being contested at the event varying from the youngest in the Cadets category through to the more experienced in life in the Over 40s categories.

Brock Lamont will be one of the local hopes in the Cadets category as he takes on the best young drivers from various parts of the country.  Lamont will be joined on the grid by no less than three current state champions in the 15-kart field.

The Wyllie Tiles Tony Kart team is well represented in the junior classes and have their best girls to challenge the boys at their own game.  Taylah Heath is one that should figure prominently in the Rookies category, Omega pilot Brock Evans is another that is expected to battle near the front of the field.  Not to be outdone Brock’s older brother Brodie also has to tackle the very fast Gemma Wyllie in Junior National Light. In Junior National Heavy Morgan Jakabovski from Hobart and Keenan Slater from Turners Beach are expected to fly the flag for the local brigade.
Clubman Super Heavy has turned out to be the smallest class in the field but will give local boy Brody Lovett and Hobart’s Josh Muskett a chance to try and stop the mainland invasion.

The wily old fox Johnathan Males must be near odds on favourite to take out Senior National Pro but in a bit of a interesting move, Sprintcar pilot Jamie Bricknell has dusted off the CRG and will challenge Males for the top honour.  Bricknell has also entered Clubman Heavy against fellow Launceston drivers Troy Stone and Zane Wyatt.  Wyatt will also be busy in Tag Light tackling locals Jade Waddington, Jake Rice and Former Tasmanian and State Champion Ben Walter.

Junior Clubman is a field that is fluttered with mainland competitors with the likes of Damon Strongman, Nicholas Rowe, Braydon North, William Hawkes and Holly Marquis set to take the fight up to the local drivers. Nicky Richards from Hobart is expected to figure prominently in his last race as a Junior and local teenager Jacob Morris has worn a groove in the track hoping for a podium at his local event.

With the Over 40s category being well supported across the Apple Isle, there are two categories for the elder statesmen at the event - a Pro weight and interestingly enough, a Super Heavy class.  Interest in this class has actually enticed a couple of mainlanders to join the local ranks in a truly unique field.  Steven Wrigley has been the dominant force of recent times and Steve Crocker in Over 40 Pro should also figure prominently as he has won nearly everything on offer recently. It is only his Hobart neighbour Michael Vaughn that might rattle his cage.

Of all the classes and the greatest expectation of Tasmanian drivers keeping the crown at home would be Nathan Zuj in Clubman Light.  Zuj has proven to be a force to be reckoned with for a number of years now and the BRM driver deserves the top accolade in this very competitive class.

Practice for the event begins on Wednesday ahead of qualifying on Friday.  The heat races will continue on Saturday with the championship finals to be contested on Sunday.

The Hardings Hotmix Kartway is located in Highclere, a few kilometres South of Burnie.
