Simpson Wins Class At Gold Cup

  27 November 2012

press release

Andy Simpson won the Sportsman Light class at the GKCV's Gold Cup meeting at Todd Road on the weekend. Simpson was driving a Kartune X30 powered Birel RY30.

After mixed results in the three heat races on Saturday (9th, DNF and 4th), Andy started the PreFinal off P10. He then drove from tenth to third, showing great pace and often setting lap times 2-3 tenths faster than his fellow competitors.

With one small change to the kart to enable Andy to compete with the Rotax powered karts off the corners, he lined up on grid 3 for the final.

Andy got a good start and tucked in behind the leader, Reece Bloomfield. On lap three, the Birel driver made the pass to take the lead and commenced setting very fast lap times, including fastest lap of the final, to take the win by over four seconds.

For 2013, Simpson will join with Karl Bond at Birel Karts Australia to take on the Rotax Pro Tour rounds, plus some Leopard events, the Vic Open and AKA Nationals at Easter.
