  9 January 2013

The Combined Districts Kart Club’s Lithgow Raceway in New South Wales will be inundated by more than 100 Lady Racers for the seventh annual Ladies Race Meeting later this month (January 26/27).

With female kart racers coming from across the country, the Lithgow venue is set to be the epicenter of the Women’s Karting Community while raising much-needed funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
While motorsport is considered a sport that is dominated by males, karting is one place where females regularly tackle the guys at their own game on an even playing field.

It is an interesting point throughout the Lithgow track’s history Ladies have competed including Eve Chipperfield, Elaine Kretzschmar, Pat Peck, Heather Maisey, “Toots” Cradock and Audrey Matthews at that first race meeting to the girls who currently race.

The lists have been long and interesting, but the common thread is that the track at Lithgow has supported girls in racing. With the likes of Cheryl Harradine, Linda Moore, Lilian Stones, who are long term competitors and supporters along with the list of current junior and senior lady drivers including the Moore sisters Emily and Sophie, Jane Stones, Stephanie Stones (that completes a family trifecta of grandmother, daughter- in-law and daughter) as well as family involvements including the Taylors, Louise and Jenny, both winners in 2012.

Other girls who compete regularly at Lithgow include Amanda Abbott, Tyra Maranik, also both winners in 2012, Angela Hearn, Alexandra Lawrence and Courtney Becker, daughter of former Australian champion Russell Becker and granddaughter of CDKC founding president, to name just a few.

The only one of its kind in Australia, the January 26/27 event will see the female racers competing across a variety of categories from Cadets, aged between seven and ten years, through to the senior ranks where a number of ladies over the age of 50 will take to the track.

“The Combined Districts Kart Club and its members have grown this event from strength to strength. This success is achieved through hard work and dedication and I wish to thank on behalf of all karters, those members involved in the organisation of this truly worthy cause,” said Karting NSW CEO/Chairman Stephen King.

Since it’s inception in 2007, the annual event has raised in excess of $100,000 for the cause and Event Co-ordinator Russell Grimson believes this year’s event is ramping up to be the biggest yet.

“Over the past few years we’ve attracted around 100 female competitors from all parts of the country at every event and this year we’re proud to have interest from a group of young girls from Tasmania and also Western Australia.  It is truly turning into a National event,” said Grimson.

“While everybody is on the track to win, the main focus for the Ladies Race Meeting is for everyone to enjoy themselves while also raising funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.”

All competitors will be vying for the Nicole Franks Perpetual Trophy, in honour of a young female racer who was tragically killed in an incident during an event at Wollongong in 2002.  The winner will be based on the overall best performance on the day from one of the 10 classes, and will receive a pink number plate and sash, their own trophy and their name engraved on the Perpetual Trophy.

Another activity across the weekend will include a Fun Category of the Ladies Canteen Cup for women involved through karting through their families.

On the Saturday night, there will also be an event dinner and special auction held at the clubhouse to raise additional funds, with some great items up for grabs.  It is at this event where the 2013 Karting Charity Princess will be crowned.  Tickets for this are available by contacting Russell Grimson on 02 4722 3847 or 0409 785 720.
