New South Wales (Carlingford, NSW) kart racer Andrew Kahl is getting set for a ‘baptism of fire’ as he starts his 2013 racing schedule in Italy next weekend (February 15-17).

Kahl will compete in arguably the toughest karting event in the world, the CIK-FIA Winter Cup at the South Garda circuit in Lonato where 93 of the world’s top drivers will compete in the elite junior category - KFJ.

It will be the second time in six months that Kahl has competed at the circuit. He finished fourth in the ROK International Cup last September at the venue, however, he is very aware that stepping into the KFJ ranks at the Winter Cup is a whole new ball game.

“This event is the CIK European season opener, almost every top young driver in the category from around the world will be competing. It is the first race of the year, so everyone is out there to impress and it’s my first event at this level, so it’s going to be very tough,” said Kahl.

“I can’t wait to get back to Italy! The competition is so strong and with the events run so professionally run, it is a real privilege to race over there.

“It’s middle of winter in Italy, so usually it’s very cold and wet, which throws another very unique element into it. My main aim is to go over there and learn as much as possible which will in turn help me in my racing here in Australia. I would like to thank Tony Kart Australia for supporting my return to Italy.”

Kahl will fly out of Sydney tomorrow (February 9) and after his event in Italy will be straight back on a plane to arrive back in Australia in time for the opening round of the CIK Stars of Karting Series presented by Castrol EDGE in Ipswich, Queensland on February 23/24.
