Rain on Saturday and overnight did not stop 68 drivers attending the first round of the Lismore Kart Club Championship for 2013. Wet under foot was not a deterrent as officials pondered whether it would be a wet or dry call for the day. A heavy shower early did not make the decision easy as some classes were set to race on slicks others not sure. Finally officials declared it dry. A number of drivers playing the options card throughout the day.

Cadet Heat 1
A field of ten youngsters were ready to face the starter for the official first heat of racing for 2013, Broc Feeney (#42) jumped away on the first lap to lead a pack of determined drivers looking to improve, he heading the pack for four laps, then  Nathan Herne (#29) moved past to take the lead, Feeney having been relegated back to second obviously not happy, but content with second after eight laps of racing, Lachlan Hughes (#15) to run the whole heat in third, likewise with Rusty Ross (#58)  in fourth, again holding the position until the completion of the heat, the first of our P Platters Jac Preston (#43P) running eighth on the first lap moving to seventh on lap two, then fifth on lap four, three non-finishers in Austin Wells (#89)  on lap six, with Jett Johnson (#17P) and Zayd Tones (#27) neither driver completing the first lap, which gave Michael Beckton (#30P), starting from seventh, moving up pass  Austin Wells after his D.N.F. on lap six, and taking  the opportunity to record a  seventh place in the first heat.

Cadets Heat 2
In heat two Nathan Herne scooted away from the field and lead for six laps obviously being challenged by Austin Wells (#89) after his D.N.F. in the first heat, who took over the running for a lap before being passed on the final lap  by Nathan Herne, to take the win, Wells in second with a great battle between Feeney, Hughes and Wells ,Fenney running third through lap five moved past Wells on lap six into second and then past Herne to take the lead, but only temporarily, as Herne, Wells and Hughes passed back to relegate Fenney back to fourth, wow, what a finish over eight laps.

Cadets Pre-Final
Broc Feeney (#42)  made amends after the second heat and  followed by Austin Wells (#89)  ran the entire pre-final in first and second places respectively, third not so easy with Zayd Tones (#27)  running third for all but the last lap, being passed by Nathan Herne (#29)  finishing third, Tones (#27)  fourth, further back Jett Johnson (#17P) the first P Plate driver home, finishing sixth after starting  from eighth for three laps before passing Jac Preston, Preston finishing seventh taking advantage of the D.N.F. Thomas Gallagher (#3P) had on the first lap. With Michael Beckton (#30P) seventh on lap one and two, then back one spot to finish in eighth, Rusty Ross finishing ninth.

Cadets Final
Additional laps for the final (12) saw Herne and Tones taking advantage of a D.N.F. by Lachlan Hughes on lap four, with Austin Wells not getting the luck of the Irish so to speak after moving up to second place past Nathan Herne on lap two, then falling back to ninth on lap three before fighting his way back up to fifth. Zayd Tones after taking over third, due to the D.N.F. was to run the final out in this position, Jett Johnson again the best of the P Plate drivers with a confidence building fourth place, Michael Beckton another P Plate driver behind Johnson in sixth, then Jac Preston seventh, Rusty Ross after a consistent performance all day unlucky with a D.N.F. on the penultimate lap, Thomas Gallagher with no laps completed in the final.

Cadets Overall
Results on the day went to first Nathan Herne, second Broc Feeney and third Austin Wells.

Rookies Heat 1
Heat 1 saw just four drivers emerge from the out grid and onto the track, Eryn Osborne (#31) the only young lady in the group was to show some surprising speed early on and lead the heat for the first five laps before a D.N.F. saw her take no further part in proceedings, Ryan Daintree moving into the spot just vacated by Osborne seeing the final three laps out in that position. Second also benefiting from Osborne’s misfortune was Kurt Orlanno (#18). There being only two finishers in the heat, with Lachlan Butler suffering a D.N.F. in the fifth lap.

Rookies Heat 2
Eryn Osborne jumped away at the start and was untroubled to make up for her first heat D.N.F. with an all lap victory. Kurt Orlanno finishing in second with Lachlan Butler third, whilst Ryan Daintree finishing fourth.

Rookies Pre Final
The pre final was a carbon copy of the second heat. Eryn Osborne again taking the win from Kurt Orlanno second, third place filled by Lachlan Butler and Ryan Daintree in fourth.

Rookies Final.
The final again a repeat of the racing positions in the pre final.

Rookies Overall
Eryn Osborne took the top spot on the podium in front of the boys with three wins and a D.N.F. second to Kurt Orlanno with a first and three seconds and a third, Ryan Daintree finishing in third, finishing all heats of racing (that is what a P Plate driver is required to do for a tick and a signature on his licence, and gets a trophy for his efforts, well done) Fourth Lachlan Butler, I am sure young Lachlan would have also received a tick and a signature on his licence.

Junior National Light Heat 1
Heat one and eleven drivers including two young ladies, Karla Curtis and Natasha Herne moved into formation for the start of lap 1. Reuben Goldsby (#65), second on the completion of the first lap moved forward to take over the lead on lap two passing Natasha Herne (#28), Kaleb Veal (#75), fifth after the first lap moved forward past Flynn Adams (#27) on lap 2 then another pass on Layton Butler (#69) and he was up to third, Veal was to shadow Natasha Herne up to lap eight before taking over second from Herne, Goldsby to take the win from Veal and Herne in third. Layton Butler (#69) third until lap three then relegated back to fourth and was to finish in this position in heat 1. Joshua Bianchin (#34)  sixth on lap one was to move forward into fifth on lap two part of the reshuffle that saw Flynn drop from fourth all the way back to ninth, Jake Wheeler and Matthew Neil along with Luke Collett also gaining positions after the reshuffle. Jake McRae and Kathy Curtis were to finish tenth and eleventh respectively.

Junior National Light Heat 2
Kaleb Veal shot to the lead and was not headed throughout the second heat, Natasha Herne being followed by Goldsby for nine laps passed Herne on the last lap to finish second, Herne third, Layton Butler fourth after a seeming unchallenged run with Matthew Neil in fifth. Luke Collett in sixth after a pass on Flynn Adams who was trying to gain ground after a slow start, Flynn finally finishing in seventh with Jake Wheeler eighth and Jake McRae in ninth after a pass from Wheeler saw him relegated back one spot. Joshua Bainchin finishing tenth and Kathy Curtis a non-finisher completing only nine laps being  recorded in eleventh.

Junior National Light Pre Final
Kaleb Veal shot to the lead at the start, and lead until lap ten before being passed by Reuben Goldsby, Layton Butler running third through until lap six, Layton was to take no further part in the race with a D.N.F. bringing his Pre final to an end. Natasha Herne being the driver to advance up into third, Kaleb Veal falling all the way down to sixth on lap ten, and finishing the pre final in sixth, meanwhile Natasha Herne moved from third to second on lap ten holding on to this position for two laps before making the pass on Reuben Goldsby on the last lap to take the win. Second place going to Reuben Goldsby, third Jake Wheeler who fought his way forward from fifth through until lap six then moving up into fourth on lap seven, a struggle then between Wheeler and Luke Collett seeing Wheeler move to third, Collett fourth and Bianchin fifth after the shakeup which saw Veal back to sixth, Jake McRae finishing in seventh and Karla Curtis eighth, Matthew Neal and Flynn Adams failing to record a lap.

Junior National Light Final
Natasha Herne started well, and lead from Goldsby second and Veal sitting in third, until lap six, Goldsby taking the lead for the next two laps before Herne was able to snatch it back again on lap eight, another change two laps later saw Goldsby move once more into the lead, Herne second and Veal sitting still back in third, Veal making his move up into second on lap fourteen to finish, Herne one, Veal two and Goldsby slipping back to third. Layton Butler, seventh on lap one moving forward into sixth past Matthew Neil and finally fifth past Jake Wheeler on lap thirteen, to finish fourth, Collett battling with Wheeler also up until lap thirteen securing sixth place outright, Matthew Neil holding seventh throughout with McRae eighth, Bianchin starting well before dropping back to tenth, picking off Karla Curtis in lap five to finish ninth, Karla Curtis tenth, Flynn Adams again failing to record a lap in the final.

Junior National Light Overall
After points were added the win went to Natasha Herne with six points, second to Reuben Goldsby with seven points and Kaleb Veal considering his move up into the Junior ranks only at the beginning of the year a well-earned third with ten points.

Junior National Heavy Heat 1.

Sportsman 125 Combined Heat 1
If the first round of the Club Championship at Lismore on the 17th February needed a feature class this was it, ten drivers moved away from the out grid to jockey for a start, Jacob Jolley (#22) started well and lead from start to finish, second to Chris Burley (#6) after only sixth on lap one moving up to third on lap two then second on lap three past Dean Amos (#2), Adam Briggs (#72) able to take advantage of two D.N.F.’s on the first lap to move up from fifth then fourth and finally third on lap four, past Dean Amos (#2) dropping back to third and then fourth on lap four, next Daniel Burley (#8) second on lap two dropping back to seventh after the rush towards the front slowed (only marginally) Daniel Burley (#8) finishing in fifth, Michael Bill (#13) ( the same number that John McCleverty drove to victory at National level on four occasions in Reed Heavy (sorry, long time ago, just popped into my head)  eight on the first lap up into fifth on lap two then back to sixth after the pass from Daniel Burley (#8) Aaron Rabjones (#28) recording a D.N.F. on lap seven, Bradley Trivett (#55) and Jamie Quinn (#23) recording only one lap, with Joshua Herne (#29) not recording a lap.

Sportsman 125 Combined Heat 2
Chris Burley (#6) jumped away to the lead and held it until Adam Briggs (#72) (who only just started in this class) determined that the second heat should be his and on lap four moved forward past Joshua Herne (#29) into second then after the demise of Chris Burley (#6) moved to the lead and was to remain in that position until the completion of the second heat. Jacob Jolley (#22) after a race long battle with Joshua Herne (#29) and , Bradley Trivett (#55) finally securing third, fourth to Trivett, fifth going to Daniel Burley (#8), sixth to Michael Bill (#13) after a D.N.F. by Aaron Rabjones (#28) on lap seven, Dean Amos (#2) recording just one lap and Jamie Quinn with no laps recorded.

Tag 125 Restricted Heavy Heat 1
A field of big men moved onto the track to take their shot at gaining maximum points in the first round of the Club Championship for 2013. It was familiar territory for Anthony (better known as Tony) Grant (#68) who held the position of President of the Club a few years back, he lead for the first three laps before another old hand Joel Gray (#13) slipped past on lap four, this struggle was to continue until the last lap when Tony Grant (#68) moved past to take the win in the first heat, second Joel Gray (#13) (have you noticed how many #13’s there are) Milos Pavlovic (#77) running third up until lap four before Luke Garrard (#73) made the pass into that position, relegating Pavlovic to fourth, Elwyn Garrard (#90) seventh for the first three laps moved to sixth then dropped all the way back to twelfth on lap five before clawing his way back to finish fifth, Lee Fritz (#57) running eighth on lap one then obviously tangling with Elwyn Garrard (#90) on lap five, moved back up to ninth before driving back to finish a creditable sixth. Martin Tones (#27) twelfth on lap one another good drive to finish up in seventh, John Cain (#4P) in tenth after the first lap took advantage of Peter Crossingham’s, (#14P) (first drive for the Koas Karting guru for this year I believe, wife Linda looking on with trepidation) also Michael Fritz (#48) and Jason Halliday (#41) all out on lap nine of ten, Justin Dunne with a D.N.F in lap six.

Tag 125 Restricted Heavy Heat 2
With a luck of the draw and reverse for the second heat, it was a completely different scenario, the two Garrard boys  finishing first and third, (Luke (#73) first with Elwyn (#90)  third) Joel Gray (#13) the  devil in between to stop the one two, finishing in second, and fighting hard to do that, lap one tenth then past both Tony Grant (#68) and Justin Dunn (#88) up to seventh, held that position through until finally passing  Milos Pavlovic (#77) into fourth two laps later past Elwyn Garrard (#90) to get to second (what a drive), Michael Fritz (#48) after the D.N.F. in heat one lead on the first lap falling back to second until lap nine being passed by Elwyn Garrard (#90)  and finished in fourth, Jason Halliday (#41) making amends after his non finish in heat one with a fifth place in heat two, Lee Fritz (#57) running well early fell back to eighth on lap five before moving forward again and finishing in sixth, Milos Pavlovic (#77) as high as fourth on lap seven finishing in seventh, Justin Dunne (#88) sixth on the first lap dropping back to ninth on lap five then moving forward one spot to finish in eighth, Tony Grant (#68) ninth at the end of lap one moved up to sixth on lap five then dropped back to eleventh on lap six before moving forward two places to finish in ninth, John Cain (#4P) finishing tenth, Peter Crossingham (#14P) completing his first full race in eleventh then Martin Tones (#27) completing all but the last lap to be placed twelfth.

Tag 125 Restricted Heavy Pre Final.
Joel Gray (#13) after a fine second in the second heat, came out with all pistons firing, took the win from , Tony Grant (#68) second, serious when it gets to the business end of the day, had to fight with Luke Garrard (#73) all the way to the final lap before securing the position Elwyn Garrard (#90) indicating that third was good having finished in that position twice now, Luke Garrard (#73) falling back to finish in fourth, fifth Jason Halliday (#41) sixth Milos Pavlovic (#77), seventh Lee Fritz (#57), eighth Martin Tones (#27) ninth Michael Fritz (#48) tenth  Peter Crossingham (#14P) ( celebrations at Kaos Karting, Peter, two in a row) then John Cain (#4P) our second P Plate driver making the distance (well done boys, knowing how tough these Restricted Heavy boys can be) finally Justin Dunne (#88) not making the distance only completing six laps.

Tag 125 Restricted Heavy Final.
The final over fifteen laps was a fitting end to a great day’s racing, Joel Gray (#13) continuing his winning form from the pre final with Tony Grant (#68) in second, Milos Pavlovic (#77) running third throughout, up until lap fourteen when disaster struck finishing with a D.N.F.  Elwyn Garrard (#90) running in fourth all the way through until the second last lap taking the advantage and moving up into a podium spot, fourth to Martin Tones (#27) running fifth until the demise of Milos Pavlovic (#77) taking out fourth, Justin Dunne (#88) running eighth up until the ninth lap finally finishing in fifth, sixth Lee Fritz (#57) after a race long battle with Michael Fritz (#48) ( ah - the stories they will tell when they get home) these two obviously related, seventh, then our first P Plate driver Peter Crossingham (#14P) (did the weight lose help Peter?) the last one to finish the distance. John Cain (#4P) out on lap fourteen and no laps recorded for both Luke Garrard (#73) and Jason Halliday (#41).

Tag 125 Restricted Heavy Overall
Points tallied and the win went to Joel Gray with four points, second to Tony Grant with thirteen points and the final position on the podium to Elwyn Garrard with fourteen points.

A great days racing was had by all. Diana Smith (the President) declared the day a great success and thanked everyone for their attendance.

Well that was the first of my reports for the Lismore Kart Club, I hope that you enjoy the read; I will be back if you do for the next round of the Lismore Kart Club Championship for 2013.

Bye for now.
