Victorian Country Series, Round 1

The opening round of the Austrans Victorian Country Series showed a superb start to the new era of karting with over 150 entries venturing to the Portland Kart Club last weekend for some great Racing!

Cadet 9:
Cadet 9 was a ring dong battle all day between the likes of Will Harper, Matthew Domanchenz and Jaxon Johnstone. Domanchenz dominated the majority of qualifying until a last ditch effort from Johnstone set up the battle, Domanchenz responded on his last attempt for pole position. Harper and Johnstone shared the heat wins setting up a battle royal for the final! All three drivers took a shot at leading the final with Harper making the decisive break in the final few laps to take the win over Domanchenz with Johnstone a close third.

Cadet 12:
Tyler Craig and Amber Miller were the talking point of Cadet 12 with two having a great battle in qualifying with Craig coming out on top! In the heats the battle continued with Craig and Miller with the likes of Troy Fortainer, Kai Allen and Hugo Simpson. Craig got the jump of the start with Simpson inserting himself in the battle at the front between himself, Craig and Miller. With some great racing occurring in the final Craig was able to take the final and clean sweep the opening round with Miller getting back in front of Simpson for second with Simpson holding on for third.

Junior National Light:
Michael Clemente was able to take a strong pole position over Jackson Rees and Jack Hutchins. Clemente took the opening heat. Clemente got a bad start in heat 2 and got involved in a battle with Jack Hutchins and Jacob Dawson allowing Jackson Rees to take heat 2. Rees got the jump of the start with Clemente having another bad start. This allowing Rees and Hutchins to break away. The two had a battle royal finish with Hutchins stealing the win at the line over Rees and a recovering Clemente in third.

Junior National Heavy:
Cody Donald dominated the early proceddings of Junior National Heavy taking pole, Heat 1 and Heat 2 in convincing fashion and looked to be a run away in the final. Michael Clemente and Nick Carroll had other ideas challenging Donald making the final a three way battle. Donald and Clemente swapped the leads a few time until Donald made the decisive break on the final lap to take the clean sweep over Clemente and Carroll in third.

Junior Clubman:
Junior Clubman was a battle royal between the likes of Max Vidau and Cody Donald. Vidau took pole position and after two very exciting heat battles Vidau was off pole for the final with Donald out of position 2. Donald got the jump of the start and lead Vidau with Kirby Hiller coming in making a three way battle for the lead. Vidau made the decisive move on Donald with two laps to go making a short break and taking the win over Donald and Hillyer in position three.

Clubman Heavy:
Clubman Heavy was all about the domination of Scott King who took a clean sweep of qualifying and all races. After battling in the heats with David Rinaldi and Remo Luciani, King was able to take a convincing win in the final! Luciani and Rinaldi had a great battle for position number 2 with Luciani coming out on top to get second over Rinaldi in third.

TaG Restricted Light:
Brayden Flood was the dominant driver all weekend in the 30 kart field of TaG Restricted Light. Flood took a clean sweep of the meeting and took a convincing win in the final but the battle for the minor places was on between the likes of Brock Rae, Guillaume Dombret, Steven Campbell and Timothy Rankin. Dombret spun at turn two opening up the battle between Campbell, Rankin and Rae. Brock Rae made a great recover to take second over Campbell who was able to come home in third.

TaG Restricted Heavy:
TaG Restricted Heavy was a battle royal between Paul Feely, Nicholas Wortley and Malcom Mason. Feely off pole for the heats and after battles with both Mason and Wortley, Feely took out both heats and off pole for the final. Wortley come alive in the final challenging Feely with the two swapping the lead on many occasions. Wortley come through for a surprise victory with Mason sneaking through to take second with Feely third.

TaG Restricted Super Heavy:
Victorian State Champion Andrew Hayes proved why he is the champion after taking pole position and three races wins to start his 2015 Victorian Country Series in convincing fashion. The battle for second was the excitement of the class all day with Stephen Kerwood, Andrew Jackman, Martin Golledge and Peter Sloan all being in the battle for the final podium spots. Golledge was able to take the decisive move with two laps to go to take second with Jackman coming home in third.

TaG Light:
Ashley Lear was another to dominate in style, taking pole and all three race wins to start his 2015 in great fashion. Brad Marsh and Maverick Benson battled over the minor spots with Benson showing great pace in the heats after a below par qualifying. Marsh was able to hang on for second position over a recovering Benson for third.

TaG Heavy:
TaG Heavy was one of the most exciting classes of the weekend with Scott King, Brad Anderson, Daniel Rethus and Mitchell Branson all being in the front battle. King took the opening two heat wins over his local competitors Anderson and Rethus. At the start of the final the three local boys tripped over each other with Branson jumping straight to the lead. King and Anderson were able to get back to the lead and had a ding-dong battle for the round win. King held on to take a double win with Anderson finishing a close second with Rethus recovering for third.

Round 2 of the Austrans Victoria Country Series will take place on the 12th of April for round 2 at the Wimmera Kart Club.
