The 1st weekend of March, Mount Gambier Karting Club played host to the opening round of the South Australian Festival State Cup.

Round 1 of the 5 Round Series saw drivers from across South Australia and throughout Western Victoria verge on the Glenburnie Raceway circuit for the two day race meeting.  With nearly 100 entries, and classes ranging from the 7 year old Cadets through to Masters 125cc, there was plenty of racing for all ages to display their talent behind the wheel.  Six track records broken over the weekend.

Saturday’s unpredictable and changing weather conditions made setup difficult for qualifying, but with threatening dark clouds passing over quickly just after lunch, racing continued without drama as the afternoon progressed.

Cadets 9 (4 Entries):    The Cadet 9 Class saw the weekend's youngest drivers hit the track putting in quick laps times from the get go.  Adelaide driver James Piszcyk  took an early heat 1 win but the remaining two heat wins saw Christian Cowie gain enough points to take the winners trophy ahead of Piszcyk  and Jessica Fortanier, placing consistently the finish her meeting in third.

Cadets 12 (13 Entries):    Some showcase racing by the Cadet 12 drivers was one of the highlights from an action packed weekend.  Adelaide’s Blake Purdie clean swept the class heats, ahead of youngster Adam Slattery and local driver Jobe Stewart using his home track knowledge rounded out the placings.

Junior National Light  (11 Entries):   JNL was won by Jason Bowyer, although he was pressured all weekend by Jordan Kervers who shared a heat win going into the final. Kervers gave his all to cross the line in second with Cooper Hay, although unlucky in the final, managing to cap the weekend off with a well-deserved 3rd placing.

Junior Clubman (9 Entries):    Junior Clubman proved to be fast paced action over the entire weekend delivering some fantastic results. Adelaide youngster Joshua Denton began his Festival State Cup campaign perfectly delivering faultless drives, clean sweeping each of his three heats to finish ahead of Hamish Ribarits and a fast finishing Tyson Harvey.  Harvey finished the weekend strong with a 2nd in the final looking to take that form into the rest of the series.

J-Max (3 Entries):   The  Junior Max 125cc class was all about Mount Gambier local, Morgan Feast who used his home track knowledge to his advantage, to dominate and faultlessly take 3 from 3 wins ahead of a consistent Jack Haverland and Charlie Carter.

TAG 125 Restricted Light (9 Entries):   TAG Light Restricted was hotly contested by all drivers, with Joshua Rust taking home the silverware ahead of Guillaume Dombret and Portland driving ace Megan Vallance who finished 3rd in her final heat and overall for the weekend. Dombert manage to cross the line in heats 1 and the Final before the rest of the field, but a 5th placing in the 2nd heat after dropping a wheel off in turn 1 saw Rust take advantage of the situation and run away with the points.

TAG 125 Light (15 Entries):   The largest class for the weekend was the TAG 125 Light Class where drivers battled for track position all weekend.  It was Jayden Sharrad who scored his first win for the weekend in the final, and it was enough to give him the collective points win over of Benjamin RedJepi and Matthew Hall.  Local Brad Saffin, proved competitive all weekend but fell to mechanical difficulties in the final.

TAG 125 Heavy (10 Entries):   TAG 125 Heavy was full of talented drivers and each heat proved entertaining for those trackside.  Adelaide’s Andrew Cash was too good for Portland local Scott King who drove well to finish the weekend ahead of Leigh Cocker. Adelaide’s Paul Pittam was an early contender for a podium position before mechanical troubles in the second heat cut short his chances of a strong showing.  He proved to have strong pace in the final by crossing the line in third to add to his points tally.

TAG 125 Restricted Heavy (8 Entries):   The TAG 125 Restricted Heavy saw local driver John Dankowski take 2 wins from three outings, finding additional track speed as the weekend's racing progressed. His first time competing with his new 125cc Iame proved not to be a problem as he used his home track experience to dominate the strong field.  Dankowski proved too quick for Steven Brown and Danny Sommerville who rounded out the podium placings in one of the hardest fought classes for the weekend.

TAG 125 Restricted Masters (10 Entries):   TAG 125 Restricted Masters saw roles reversed with a consistent Steven Brown getting the better of Dankowski who finished second ahead of David Brewer who took out the minor placing.
