Warwick Kart Club Championship, Round 3

A huge 110 entries fronted for the 3rd Round of the Warwick Kart Club Championship at Sandy Creek Raceway on May 10th. As always, competitors were greeted with the usual fantastic weather, albeit a little chilly early in the morning. Word has certainly got around that Sandy Creek Raceway is a great place to race and competitors came from far and wide to sample the hospitality.

Sportsman Light was the Feature Class and qualifying was conducted, followed by a Heat, Pre Final and Final, with the Final only counting. For all other classes, random grid draws were the order of the day and racing was conducted over 2 Heats, a Pre Final and a Final with all results to accumulate.

Cadet 9

Tristan Griffin, Ethan Feather and Marcus Watson were the pacesetters and shared the top 3 in each race throughout the day. Griffin with 2 x 1st’s and 2 x 2nd’s just edged out Feather who finished with 2 x 1st’s, a 2nd and a 3rd. Watson wasn’t too far behind with 1 x 2nd and 3 x 3rd’s. Julia Arkadieff has improve dramatically in recent times and was very consistent with 4 x 4th placings to be 4th overall and 1st P Plater. 5th overall was Magnus Mann ahead of the 2nd P Plater Luke Trost.

Cadet 12

Charlie Ploetz continued his dominance of Cadet 12 with 4 clear wins across the day. Thomas Cooper and Oscar Comley battled hard for the minor placings all day. Cooper taking 2nd in the Final and beating Comley on the countback. Jack Grambauer and Kai Walker had some fierce battles all day for 4th and 5th, Grambauer just having a bit extra to finish 4th overall. Walker was 5th and Brady Mitchell starting to get a lot closer to the frontrunners finishing 6th overall. Harry Lawrence was again the 1st P Plater.

Junior National Light

A huge field of 21 entries fronted for JNL. Broc Feeney had a superb day with 3 wins and a 4th placing to finish 1st overall. Zayd Tones, Jarrod Costello and Jac Preston were his main challengers and fought over the podium placings all day. Tones had a great run in the Final whilst Costello battled to only 7th, which enabled Tones to finish 2nd overall and Costello hanging on to 3rd overall. After a poor 1st Heat result, Preston recovered well to finish 4th overall and Harrison Stock had a brilliant day ending up 5th overall. Zoe Walker was the best of the 4 P Platers.

Junior National Heavy

Nicholas Currie had 4 very good wins in JNH and was a very deserved overall winner. Jade Hardacre is making great progress and had some good battles with Reece Carkeet, these two finishing 2nd and 3rd overall.

J Max

A strong field of 19 entries fronted for J-Max and Jamie Gillan surprised a few with a strong win in Heat 2 and the Pre Final and then a smart drive to 4th in the Final to just hold out Broc Feeney with a 2nd, a 5th, a 3rd and then 1st in the Final. Damon Ash looked very strong at times throughout the day with the 1st Heat win and 2nd in the Pre Final and Final, but his 2nd Heat where he had to come from the back of the grid but could only get up to 7th probably cost him a better overall placing. Jake Wheeler was the best of the rest and his consistency rewarded him with 4th overall. Benjamin Deissler had an up and down day to salvage 5th overall.

Rotax Light & Tag 125 Light

James Wilkins, Brandon Doolan and Jackson Lines were the only 3 Rotax Light entries, but Wilkins and Doolan enjoyed some very close racing all day. Wilkins just beat Doolan in the 1st 2 Heats, Doolan got the upper hand in the Pre Final, but Wilkins got back in front in the Final and won overall on points. Lines couldn’t quite match the front two and finished 3rd overall. Nariko McDonell was the only Tag 125 Light entry and had a lonely day chasing the boys out front.

Qld Sportsman Heavy

Ben Lillis continued his great form in Sportsman Heavy with a dominant performance, coming from rear of field in Heat 1 to 2nd place and then winning the remaining 3 races. Stephen Wilkinson won the 1st Heat and kept Lillis very honest in the Final but had a bad 2nd Heat, allowing Ben McCombie with consistent driving to sneak in to 2nd on points for the day. Adam Nesbitt and Nathan Hoffman rounded out the top 5.

Qld Sportsman Light

Sportsman Light was the feature class and after some problems in qualifying which left him last on the grid, Daniel Plant put on a masterful display of driving to come through and take the Pre Final win and then the Final. The usual pacesetter Shane Roberts and fastest qualifier Andrew Walker looked good early in the Heats, but Plant was superb in the Final and took a convincing win from Roberts and Luke Thomas. Jordan Condor came through in 4th in the Final ahead of Walker in 5th.

The next race meeting at Warwick will be the Rotax Pro Tour Round on the 5th, 6th and 7th of June.
