ROUND 4 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - 23RD MAY 2015

The morning promised a perfect day for racing and attracted a total of 185 competitors towing their spanner men and families along for the fourth round of the Club Championship at Ipswich Kart Club. It would be qualifying for all classes and today a special attraction, “Cadets Experience” with a total of twelve youngsters getting their first chance to go racing (under strict supervision) on a real race track.

The Club has been fortunate in that the attendance for 2015 (so far) over four rounds of racing has averaged 167.5 competitors, so today was to see the average maintained.

The classes running for today as follows: Cadet 9 (12), Cadet 12 (25), Junior National Light and Heavy combined (18), Jmax (20), Restricted 125 Light (23) and Heavy (15), TaG 125 Light (17) and Heavy (12), DD2 and DD2 Masters combined (12), Qld Sportsman Restricted 125 Super Heavy and Restricted 125 Masters 0’35 (19) and the twelve youngsters in the Cadet Experience field.

All was set to go and in the capable mans of our Clerk of the Course, Chris Robinson the meeting started just five minutes after the scheduled start time, our Grid Marshall Les Antrobus,  getting the carburation sessions going right on time (thank you Les). The racing format for the day, qualifying (6 minutes) 1 Heat, Prefinal and a Final only to count.

Cadet 9 Qualifying
This class has been very competitive in 2015, it is the first year that this class has been run and is proving to be very popular, after the six minute session the grid for the Heat was to look like this: Pole Marcus Flack (#11) 57.241 seconds, P2 Jack Westbury (#29) 57.268, P3 Ethan Feather (#26) 57.427, P4 Tristan Griffin (#83) 57.522, P5 Oscar Targett (#2) 57.844, P 6 Marcus Watson (#7) 57.861, with only .62 of a second separating the first six drivers we were in for one hell of a day’s competition.

Cadet 9 Pre Final (10 laps)
The Prefinal was as competitive as the heat, with Marcos Flack holding the lead until Jack Westbury working behind Tristan Griffin for the first six laps finally got the better of young Griffin on lap seven, and one lap later passing Marcos Flack to take the lead and going on to hold the lead and win by a margin of .421 seconds, Tristan Griffin finishing strongly a further .399 seconds away in third, Oscar Targett off his usual brilliant best, finishing a distant 4. 307 seconds back in fourth, fastest lap going to Tristan Griffin, after a fine drive into third with a time of 57.087 seconds recorded on the eighth lap of the required ten.
Cadet 9 Final (13 laps)
We all knew that the final (only to count) would be a great fight between the three drivers, who, had shown their credentials throughout the day, Flack, Westbury and Griffin, Jack Westbury got away well and led the first two laps before being swallowed up by Marcus Flack on the third lap of a scheduled thirteen, meanwhile Blake McDonald got caught in the middle of a duel for third between Tristan Griffin and Oscar Targett, young Oscar getting the better of the duel for the first six laps before eventually getting past Flack for second, but, only for three laps before Flack came back and regained second on lap ten, the fight for the minor placings was not to finish there, young Tristan Griffin sitting back and watching all the action in fourth position throughout decided on the penultimate lap to swoop around Oscar Targett and secure third, Griffin finishing just .133 of a second behind second placed Marcus Flack, great racing from all concerned, the fastest lap being recorded by Marcus Flack with a time of 57.151 on lap four. After post-race technical inspection all results were confirmed.

Adam Briggs (up from Lismore) determined to make it as hard as he could for all the rest drove brilliantly to record his second win of the day, the margin back to second again over a second this time 1.023 seconds and again Brock Lannoy was required to watch this young man from Northern NSW grab the pole for the start of the final, third, in the prefinal Blake Brooks (fastest lap in the Heat) was to improve his position from eighth in the Heat, Nick Dalton finishing fourth a further .398 of a second away, Shawn McNamara (#95) in fifth and Chris Burley finishing sixth, the fastest lap recorded in the prefinal going to Blake Brooks  with a time of 49.695 seconds on his seventh lap.
TaG 125 Light Final (15 laps)
We had been privy to some excellent racing in the Heat and Prefinal and all the best positions on the fence were crammed with onlookers to watch what, we were anticipating being a final that would be spectacular, Adam Briggs from pole jumped well and led the first eleven laps being closely shadowed by Blake Brooks in second, meanwhile Brock Lannoy off the second row alongside Nick Dalton having a great battle for supremacy over the first laps before  Lannoy finally got the better of Dalton, now third, Lannoy turned his attention to Adam Briggs and on lap twelve was able to reach the front of a very competitive field of TaG Light drivers looking for a win in the final only count format of racing, Blake Brooks dropped from first all the way back to eighth on lap twelve and then even further back to eventually finish in twelfth, meanwhile Adam Briggs having dropped back to second on lap eleven dropped a further spot on the following lap back to third, Nick Dalton and Shawn McNamara fighting for position finished the twelfth lap in two and fourth respectively, the order  at the completion of the twelfth lap saw Brock Lannoy then Nick Dalton from Adam Briggs and then Shawn McNamara in fourth, fifth Chris Burley in eighth after the completion of lap one having moved forward into fifth, sixth throughout except for dropping back behind Chris Burley for one lap came Mathew Byrne, with Jordan Condor finishing in seventh, eighth Mika Oksanen, ninth Daniel Burley and tenth after a lack lustre day Dean Weigman, with all drivers due for Post-Race Technical Inspection we were to wait before the positions as they crossed the line were announced as official, a disruptive lap eleven causing the first five or six drivers to change their race plans, the fastest lap going to Brock Lannoy with a time of 49.755 seconds on lap nine, giving Brock his first well deserved  win in this class.

TaG 125 Heavy Qualifying
This class has produced some excellent racing over the last four years, and today was to be no exception, a very heathy field of twelve drivers presented for the six minute session and at the completion the first three rows of the grids were as follows: Pole: Chris Williams (#3) 50.116 seconds; P2 Jarad Neinert (#18) 50.461; P3 Ryan O’Sullivan (#31) 50.497; P4 Joel Gray (#13) 50.726; P5 Clem O’Mara (#67) 50.743 and P6 Ashley Lester (#27) 50.746 seconds, with just .63 of a second separating the top six we again were in for some exciting racing in this class.
TaG 125 Heavy Heat (10 laps)
The Heat got under way with Chris Williams decidedly the quickest and able to take a clear victory in the first of the day by a margin of 2.848 seconds over Jarad Neinert in second and Ryan O’Sullivan making up the top three, next home came Clem O’Mara followed by Joshua Amundsen (surely a relative of Craig Amundsen?) with Nathan Pierce finishing in sixth, the fastest lap reorded by Chris Williams with a time of 50.243 seconds on his seventh lap.
TaG 125 Heavy Prefinal (12 laps)
The prefinal was what appeared to be an easy run for Chris Williams the margin back to second placed Joshua Amundsen 6.343 seconds, third Clem O’Mara and fourth going to Joel Gray, fifth place Peter Bossons and sixth Ashley Lester, fastest lap going again to Chris Williams with a time of 50.349 seconds on his fifth lap of racing.
TaG 125 Heavy Final (15 Laps)
The final was to be a Chris Williams bonanza he clean swept the class from qualifying through Heat, Prefinal and now the Final and did it with what appeared to be consummate ease, the margin at the end of fifteen laps being 2.441 seconds over Jarad Neinert with Clem O’Mara in third, Neinert had to fight for his second coming from sixth on the first lap arriving at third on lap ten before snatching second off Clem O’Mara, who had been running second throughout the final until lap ten, Ryan O’Sullivan eighth on the first lap moving forward into fifth before slip streaming Joshua Amundsen on lap twelve to go on and finish in that position, so Clem O’Mara finishing third, Peter Bossons making a last lap pass on Joel Gray to finish sixth, fastest lap need I mention it? Yes! Chris Williams certainly made a clean sweep over the whole class taking the fastest lap in the final with a time of 50.486 seconds on his seventh lap.
Congratulations to all concerned for an exciting and action packed afternoon of racing.

DD2 and DD2 Masters Combined Qualifying
Another great field of DD2’s and DD2 Masters ( total 12) took to the track for six minutes of helter skelter laps to determine who would start off pole for the Heat, at the completion the first three rows of the grid where to look as follows: Pole Ryan Kennedy (#65) 48.271 seconds P2 Jack Smith (#98) 48.580; P3 James Wilkins (#5) 48.631; Tristan Ellery (#10) 48.804 seconds ( all four DD2’s) P5 Scott Howard (#39) 48.861; P6 Klinton Hancey(#21) 49.061; (Howard and Hancey both Masters), again with just .79 of a second between the first six competition was expected to by fierce.
DD2 and DD2 Masters Combined Heat (10 Laps)
Our Pole setter Ryan Kennedy won the Heat, the margin back to Tristan Ellery in second 4.450 seconds, a great drive from Scott Howard to finish third just.282 of a second behind the two DD2 drivers, (remember the weight difference 173 Klgs for DD2 and 180 Klgs for Masters) Gavin Whitmore another Master running home in fourth with Bradley Dawson (Master) in fifth, the fastest time recorded by Ryan Kennedy with a time of 48.593 seconds on his eighth lap.
DD2 and DD2 Masters Combined Prefinal (12 laps)
With Klinton Hancey recording a DNF in the Heat we were expecting him to come out in the prefinal with a burr under his seat, and he did just that, starting from the rear of the grid and finishing fourth overall, the winner of the prefinal was again Ryan Kennedy, second on this occasion going to Scott Howard, a brilliant drive from this Master class entrant, third Tristan Ellery, Howard splitting the two DD2 drivers the difference back to Ellery from Kennedy being just 5.753 seconds, the fastest lap on this occasion going again to Kennedy with a time of 48.425 seconds on his eighth lap.
DD2 and DD2 Masters Combined Final (15 laps)
Ryan Kennedy was the class of the field and took the final in fine style with a margin of 8.055 seconds over young James Wilkins (who is definitely warming to this class), third the man who has shown he can lap just as quickly as the lighter DD2 drivers,  Klinton  Hancey putting up a great performance as he always does, both Hancey and Wilkins putting in their fastest laps on the final lap of competition, the fastest lap again going to Ryan Kennedy with a 48.480 time set on his eleventh lap. Overall after PRTI the results stood as follows: DD2 first Ryan Kennedy, Second James Wilkins and third Tristan Ellery, in the Masters class first went to Klinton Hancey, second Gavin Whitmore and third Bradley Dawson, a thoroughly enjoyable class of racing and I look forward to their next visit to the Club.
