Pegoraro Fastest at Day 1 Rockpress Coach Design Australian Superkart Nationals

The Rockpress Coach Design Australian Superkart Championship turned its first laps on Friday of the Sydney Motorsport Park round of the Shannons Australian Motor Racing Nationals with 25 karts taking to the track over the course of the day.

The usual foxing and second guessing was taking place with only 14 karts running with transponders on. Reigning champion Gary Pegoraro was fastest in the Dunlop Kartsport/BRC Engines Amderson-BRC, setting a 1:29.9779 in the slippery conditions. He would be the only driver below 90 seconds. Warren McIlveen was second fastest 1:31.4260 in the Stockman Superkarts Stockman-VM although only a few laps were recorded after gearbox issues led to an engine change and clutch problems brought an early end to their day. Martin Latta is back in the MJR Bricklaying Anderson-DEA he last raced in 2013. He was third fastest, but well off the pace in the 1:35s. Of the others, the quick teams took things easily. 2013 champion Russell Jamieson ran conservatively, bedding in componentry now that 2014s ignition issues have been traced. Jason Smith spun the Tekhome Anderson-DEA.

V8 Touring Car champion Justin Ruggier settled in rapidly in his Superkart debut in the Anydoor and Gates Avoig-KTM, leading the 250 National class, getting down to a 1:36.2074 getting in lots of laps in each session. Aaron Cogger (Rat Pack Racin Avoig-KTM) set 1:37.1444 to be second fastest. The form guide for 250 National is wide open and the strongest field in years. Dan Lewis (Lewis Plumbing Anderson-Gas Gas) spent the day spinning as the Queenslander acclimatised to the cold and slippery track. Dale Williams (Spilstream Signs Anderson-Yamaha) and Scott Appledore (Beyel Stud Rams/Hughes Bros Removals Anderson-Honda) also spent time off the circuit. Despite Williams excursions the pace of young team mate Jordan Ford (Slipstream Signs Anderson-Yamaha) has the team quietly confident.

Paul Campbell (Redback Racepaint ACT Avoig-Honda) was fastest in the 125 National class on a 1:39.1269, just three hundredths of a second ahead of Jeff Reed (Stockman Superkarts Stockman-Honda), hinting at another incredibly close 125 National battle.
