Ferraro & Burke Crowned ' King of the Hill'

from Troy Thompson 3 September 2015

Hurricane Go Kart Club’s annual King of the Hill was again a great success with almost 300 entries. The feature classes of Restricted 125 Light & Heavy put on some great racing.

The new Kings of the Hill are Saverio Ferraro (Light) with an almost a perfect weekend (3 wins & 2nd) and Ryan Burke (Heavy) who did have a perfect weekend (4 wins & pole position).

All class place getters received prize money (and a big fake cheque) along with their trophies. There was also $6000 worth of prizes put up by the event's major sponsor, Harvey Norman in Joondalup, for a random draw for all entrants.

Cadet 9 – Was won by Luca Nici in his Ricciardo Kart. Jett Demarte had been dominant but the kart failed to start for the final.

Junior Clubman – The Thompson / Dicker domination this year was finally broken by Aaron Love. This class has prospered this year with now over 20 entrants and only 0.1sec covered the top 11’s fastest times in the final. The KA100 motor has taken away the cheque book & put it down to driver & chassis.

Restricted 125 Light – Saverio Ferraro won the day but Brooke Miller made him work for it. She was fastest qualifier & won heat 1 but some bad luck in heat 2 made the rest of the weekend a challenge but still managed 2nd in the final.

Cadet 12 – Cody Leunen drove a dominant final to win over Dylan Ferfolja. Sam Christison was the pace setter early in the meeting but a mistake in the pre-final had him starting from 22nd in the final and ended his chance of a result in such a competitive field.

Clubman Heavy – Nothing separated the top 3 in this class. Thomas Sparkes in his Praga managed to prevail over the FK’s of Gwilliam and Davis.

Open – Young AJ Nash drove a smart final in his KZ to out manoeuvre the 200cc twin of Blake Preston and take the win. Twelve months ago he was the Jnr National Heavy King of the Hill, now he’s racing KZ3, Open and Sprintcars!

Jnr Nat Heavy – Brock McGregor overcame his kart issues from Saturday to take the win in the final. Terrence Flynn-Dowell drove from the back of the pack to take second with Cooper Scott fighting an ill handling kart to hang on for third.

Jnr Nat Light – As always this class was closely contested, Damon Papasergio was the only multiple race winner and won the final from Aaron Love and current state champ Jesse Thomas.

Restricted 125 Heavy – What can you say? Burkie dominated. Time to take the restrictor out I think.

TaG 125 Heavy – Local (part time these days) racer Ryan Barron drove a great final to win over Taylor Thomas (who lead most of the race) and Bayley Bell. Bayley had won the 3 earlier races but missed the setup in the final.

TaG 125 Light – There’s always action when these guys hit the track. Lewis Shugar drove a perfect opening couple of laps in the final to establish a lead in his CRG that Adam Levi just couldn’t chase down.

Snr Nat Combined – State Champ Thomas Gray held off Mark Rosenhauer in the final. These two shared the wins throughout the weekend.

Clubman Light – Nick Mitic’s speed on cold tyres in the opening lap of each race had a quality field chasing him all weekend. The hard luck story was Tom Schou who was fastest qualifier but a broken rear bumper in the final upset the handling and kept him off the podium.

Sportsman Masters – Local veteran Paul Hughes had a perfect weekend to cement his place at the top of this class.

Sportsman Super Heavy – Thomas McPherson drove his Monaco past Tim White on the penultimate lap to record his first King of the Hill win. Bad luck for front runners Nathan Terrell (snapped chain) and Dan Montgomery who was on track to win his first open only to get tangled up with a back marker & DNF’d.

KZ3 – The National Series point’s leader lived up to expectation with a powerful win in the final. Look for the WA KZ3 Series official race report for further details.
