Karting News Briefs

  2 February 2016

catch-up on all things kart racing...

But first, a message from the Chief Bottlewasher:

I want to give club karters and club level karting more coverage in 2016. This can only happen with the assistance of people within the clubs.

Do you wonder why some clubs get their race meetings covered on the site, yet others don't? There's a pretty simple answer: I can't publish stuff I don't have.

So, is there a person (or people) at your club who can write up a bit of a race report, take a few photos then send it all through for publication on KartSportNews? I'm more than happy to give your club members and drivers some recognition for their racing efforts, but I have to rely on others to submit this information.

Now, go read more about this on the Contribute page    :)

Cheers,
Mark Wicks

  • Chaz Mostert dominated the field on his return to racing at the Ipswich kart track on the weekend. Competing in the TaG 125 Heavy class, Chaz qualified on pole in the 19-kart field, 0.162sec faster than Martin Swindalls. From there, Chaz simply dominated the results aboard his CRG/Galaxy, winning the heat, pre-final and 12-lap final. Swindells was classified second, Jarad Neinert third. See more on the AutoAction site HERE. The 23-year old had previously predicted “I’ll probably get hosed" (see AutoAction HERE), but that certainly wasn't the case!

  • Speaking of Dubbo, the official race program for the opening round of the Australian Kart Championship is HERE. This 32-page online publication includes event preview, full entry list, series point system, time table etc.

  • Phil Silcock, Director of Superkarts Australia, has clarified running Stock Honda karts in the 2016 SKA National Series. “Stock Honda has always been more than welcome at the SKA events, either as their own class with a minimum of 5 entries OR for numbers less than 5 entries, to enter the 125cc National class at 190kg. The Stock Honda class will receive the same awards that each of other classes (250I, 250N and 125N) receive if the minimum five entries are received."

  • AKRA is asking their karters whether they want tyre pooling at the Orange Nationals at Easter. "I've done a deal with both Dunlop for SL1 at $198 per set, and DPE for MG Red at $200, for tyre pooling. What do you think - do we do tyre pooling, yes or no?" AKRA's Troy Boldy commented on Facebook.

  • How well planned out is your pit area? This is the HDR Arrow Karts pit area plan for 2016. The team's marquees have expanded to 24m x 6m under roof, creating a total 27m x 9m pit area. The expansion will see additional in-pit lighting and new chairs to seat up to 15 in the catering area and 20+ crew.

  • With the next round of Pro Tour at their circuit, the Warwick Kart Club advise that at the next club round (this Sunday, February 7) they will offer Rotax Light, DD2 and Junior MAX in addition to all their usual KA classes. "Rotax Heavy are welcome to join the Light class" the club advised. "With the change of this meeting from the traditional winter round to the hotter climate of February, setup will be crucial. Come and practise for Pro Tour!" CMS entries are now open.

  • WA's Kip Foster has got the right attitude with this post he made on social media:
"I don't know bout all u guys.... But I'm loving my karting at the moment. Had a blast racing people I've helped through the last few years even got beat by a few of them. Fabulous. Well done guys. WA karting has some great talent in all the categories - Cadets through to the seniors. My thought is forget about the politics and concentrate on the racing. Otherwise you're going to be left behind."

  • Some news regarding Ipswich Kart Club:
    • Firslty, Ipswich will be offering TAG Restricted Super Heavy at their race meetings this year.
    • Secondly, at the clubs' first club championship round last weekend, a group of Comer-engined Cadet 9s ran in their own class, not with the MiniRoks. "On behalf of the drivers and families I would like to thank everyone for allowing the Cadet 9 Comer class to run" Erin Sell, wrote on the Ipswich Kart Club's Facebook group. "Without this class, none of these kids would be able to race. It is classes like this that allow them to build their confidence and skill in an environment that is slower. Not only does it give the beginners a chance to get better, it allows the fast kids to have a race without having our guys out on the track holding them up or making mistakes. They learned so much at today's meet - three of their 5 sessions were completely incident free and they had such a great time. Many thanks to Chaz Mostert for sponsoring the Comer kids and to Jo Mackay for putting the time and energy into the kids to help them improve."

  • Word from the UK is that a number of kart clubs in Britain are storming ahead with a tyre limitation program to reduce the amount spent throughout a year of racing. The Association of British Kart Clubs plan to conduct some meetings on the topic to determine the positives and negatives of such a scheme and to garner feedback from as many as possible "in order that we can get a balanced view from the drivers/parents/competitors".

  • Time-lapse of a professional at work - legendary Peter de Bruijn, owner of the PDB Racing Team, builds a new Gillard TG15 at the 2016 Florida Winter Tour for Mario Barrios who was competing in the Rotax Masters category. Mario finished 4th on the weekend.

  • Karter Rankings are back! Craig Matthews, who has been involved with karting for over 20 years, had previously run the www.karterrankings.com website. "I ran this previously with success" he told KartSportNews, "but it just took up too much time." However, he reckons that, after seeing a recent top karters list in a print publication, "it has to be done again." The site ranks Australian karters based on points received from State Title or National series events. After the opening round of Pro Tour, Victorian Lee Mitchener leads the ranking.
