Karting News Briefs

  9 February 2016

catch-up on all things kart racing...

  • This is the result of a massive shunt by Detroit's Derek Dignan in the USA. Somehow, he walked away from this! "My tie rod broke on the front stretch of 103rd Street in Jacksonville, Florida and I went straight through the kink and ran into the fence lining the grid area" Derek told KartSportNews. The chassis frame was quite obviously written off and Derek confirmed there was virtually nothing salvagable from the front half of the kart.

  • Woodgate Racing, the Melbourne-based kart workshop and superkart chassis constructor, will have Maxxis HG3 tyres in stock in March - reserve yours now! Ring Peter Woodgate - 0410 483 864

  • The TaG Super Series uses an interesting sliding-scale point score system. Basically, the more drivers in the field, the bigger the points haul each driver will get from the round. The series regulations and pointscore matrix for the 2016 season, which commences at Lithgow on February 21, is below. (series website/page HERE)

  • Getting chopped while on the straight - not cool. Who teaches kids this sh*t?

  • The KA1 field at the AKC was down by one before the event even started. Victorian Blaine Densley was admitted to hospital during the Thursday night prior to practice and was operated on for a burst appendix. "Not the way I planned my race weekend in Dubbo to go!!" he wrote on Facebook. He is hoping to leave Dubbo hospital early next week. "Such a huge shame I didn't even get to turn a lap around the track after a 10 hour trip here. I guess it just wasn't my weekend!"

  • Supp Regs for Round 1 of the Victorian Kart Championship, to run at the Go-Kart Club of Victoria from March 10 to 13, are on the Race Calendar page.

  • The Gippsland Go Kart Club is in the process of extending the track's Tech Shed. The concrete slab went down a few days ago. The club will host the opening round of the Golden Power Series on March 5 & 6. Supp Regs are HERE.

  • Speaking of the Golden Power Series, the TaG Restricted Masters class has returned for 2016. "The class is for Over 40s drivers at 172kg, Rotax Evo’s at 177kg" Daryl Buck informed KartSportNews. "This class offers serious but clean racing with the emphasis on enjoying the weekend rather than win at all costs."

  • The Galdstone Kart Club advise the Norton Rogers Memorial was postponed due to the unstable and extreme weather that was forecast. The club has made application to Karting Queensland to run the event on Saturday, March 12.

  • Having recently had a technical issue with the site, Kracer has fixed the problem and now offer something of interest to all karters. "To celebrate (and apologise) we're offering free freight on all orders that include a set of tyres" they informed KartSportNews. "Every karter needs tyres. Let's face it, the set you bought last year that have lost their edge, or have gone hard from baking in the trailer all summer, are going to be waaay off the pace. So, here's your chance to jump onto a nice fresh set of boots. Nothing is more confidence inspiring, so we're covering the freight for you! Shop online and get your tyres delivered straight to your door. Click https://kracer.com.au/parts/wheels-and-tyres/tyres.html Offer ends Sunday 14th of February 2016.

  • In preparation for the upcoming Rotax Pro Tour round at the venue, Ipswich Kart Club advise that the next club day at the track on February 20 will offer DD2 & DD2 Masters. TaG Restricted Super Heavy (@200kg) and TaG Restricted Masters will also be on the card.

  • Launceston Kart Club member Tate Frost was unfortunately involved in a nasty accident in heat three of the Australian Kart Championship round at Dubbo on Saturday. The incident resulted in two broken bones in his foot, forcing him to withdraw from the meeting. Tate was scheduled to have an operation to insert pins. He will be out of action for around six weeks. Get well soon, Tate!

  • Australian developer Black Delta released the very first gameplay trailer of the highly anticipated PC kart racing game, KartKraft, a few days ago. The trailer below is the first that has been created completely in-game. Originally titled KartSim, KartKraft is coming to Steam Early Access with a scheduled Q1 2016 release. It will feature a number of Australian circuits. The wet track looks rather interesting!

  • Jiuxin Events, an organisation that was pivotal in bringing Formula 1 to China and the creation of the Shanghai International Circuit, has signed a 5 year deal to run an Asian franchise of the UK's Formula Kart Stars program. Although the British and Asian Championships will run independently, drivers from both Championships will be invited to take part in driver exchange programmes. The Franchise will be officially announced at the Chinese Grand Prix in April. Read more on kartingmagazine.com HERE.

  • Kai Allen has jumped to the top of the Karter Rankings after the opening round of the Australian Championship on the weekend. Allen has 90 points ahead of Shay Mayes (70), Cody Brewczynski (69), James Wharton (67) and Troy Woolston (67). 152 drivers have so far scored points. • The Victorian Superkart Club will have a static display of machines at the upcoming FPM Motorexpo. The expo will be held in the Royal Exhibition building in Carlton from April 8 to 10.

  • Dave Sera is now offering online coaching via cameras fitted to karts. "Most drivers now have some sort of camera fitted to the front or side of their kart which allows me to identify race lines, steering techniques and analyse races you may have wondered what went wrong!" Dave wrote on Facebook. Sera is offering the service as he believes not all drivers are able to get one-on-one coaching or be a part of a group session due to costs, location or time.

  • This is the new logo for the 2016 Victorian Country Series. Pre-entry for the opening round at Cobden this weekend is about to close. We hear there's 190+ entered so far with a 32-kart TaG field. Supp Regs are on the Race Calendar.

I want to give club karters and club level karting more coverage in 2016. This can only happen with the assistance of people within the clubs.

Do you wonder why some clubs get their race meetings covered on the site, yet others don't? There's a pretty simple answer: I can't publish stuff I don't have.

So, is there a person (or people) at your club who can write up a bit of a race report, take a few photos then send it all through for publication on KartSportNews? I'm more than happy to give your club members and drivers some recognition for their racing efforts, but I have to rely on others to submit this information.

Now, go read more about this on the Contribute page    :)

Cheers,
Mark Wicks
